(Mar 18, 2003) Meghan
Owen of Killingly saved the her best effort of the season for her
last race in a thrilling duel with Chantelle Dron of Candia NH in the
Girls 1-Mile Race at the NSIC in New York on Sunday. In a race that saw
a first half of 2:26, both Dron and Owen led the other racers around the
oval at a frenetic pace. With victory seemingly at hand for Dron, Owen
made her charge over the last 100-meters. Both Owen and Dron hit the
finish tape together. It wasn't until some minutes later that the
official times were reported: Dron was given 4:51.350 and Owen was
clocked at 4:51.351, only 1/1000 of a second separated Owen from first
place. From Owen's perspective, she saw the race as another powerful
step in the right direction, one that will lead the senior to future
stellar performances. In other races in New York, Mark Olivier of
Fitch was third in the 2-Mile run with a time of 9:26.33,
Hillhouse Girls 4x400 team ran a quick 3:58.77, Reynolds Chapman
of Griswold finished 6th in the 1-Mile in 4:19.19, in the 4x800
Relay the Ridgefield Girls team ran 9:26.89 to place 6th while
the Wilton Boys 4x800m ran a very fast 8:05.63 to place eleventh.
Also, congratulations to Lacey-Ann Parker of Ledyard who placed
third with a
throw of 42'-7.50" in the Girls Shot Put.

Hillhouse Girls Sprint to Open
Title...
(Feb 23, 2003) Before the
start of the Girls 4x400m Relay, Hillhouse Coach Gary Moore remarked
that his team was in good position to win the State Open title since
they were ahead by about nineteen points. He attributed the lead to a
total team effort and solid performances in the sprints; especially the
55m dash where his team scored 18 points. In addition to the 55m trio of
Debra Blake, Ebony Beatty and Shanice Goffe, Hillhouse
also recorded victories in the 300m with Dominique Curtis, the
600m with Jayne Penn, and both the 4x200m and 4x400m relays.
Hillhouse out-sprinted runner-up Danbury 59-30 to earn their third CIAC
Girls State Open title in four years.
Two State Open records were set at the meet held at the New Haven Track
& Field Center. The first record was set by Meghan Owen of Killingly
in the 1000m where she narrowly beat Abbey Sadowski (Griswold)
2:53.19 to 2:53.43. Both runners eclipsed the old mark of 2:56.07 set by
Maxine Clark of Weaver in 1993. Owen also was a victor in the 1600m
where she bested Sadowski again. The second mark was set by Lacey-Ann
Parker of Ledyard in the Shot Put when she won the event with a
throw of 42'-0.25" to erase the mark of 41'-10" set by Allison Bradshaw
of Pomperaug.
In the first relay event of the day, Ridgefield comfortably won
the 4x800m by a 6-second margin in 9:37.31 while William Hall High
School also won the 1600m Sprint Medley by 6-seconds in 4:21.85.

Danbury Vaults Past Griswold for
Open Victory...
(Feb 23, 2003) In one of
the closest meets since Xavier's 2-point win in 1999, Danbury used the
two points from the fifth place finish by vaulter Leon Breece to
capture their fourth CIAC Boys State Open title in six years with a
37-36 victory over Griswold. Both Griswold and Danbury were the last
teams to leave the building since the Pole Vault didn't finish until
well after all the other races had concluded due to technical problems.
Griswold's two-man team of Gavin Coombs and Reynolds Chapman
almost gave them the victory with wins by Chapman in the 1000m, Coombs
in the 1600m (Chapman 2nd) and a second place by Coombs in the 3200m.
But Danbury used a mix of solid performances in individual and relay
events including Jay Juh in the Long Jump(1st), Jon Kolodziej
in the 600m(2nd), Peter Teng in the 55m Hurdles(6th), 1600m
Sprint Medley Relay (1st) and the 4x400m Relay (3rd).
There were several outstanding performers at the meet including Ken
Walker of Bloomfield who repeated as State Open Champion in both the
55m and 300m dashes. Ahmed Haji of Conard ran 4:38 for 1600m on
route to a convincing victory in the 3200m in 9:22.13. Matt Zagura
of Ellington had one of the season's best throws, 56'-1.5", to win the
Shot Put. Jerome Harris of Hamden was 1/100th of a second from
equaling the meet record in his win in the 55m Hurdles with a time of
7.46 seconds. In the relays, Ledyard won a close race in the
4x800m with a time of 8:22.05 over Ridgefield (8:23.38) and
Hall HS (8:23.52). The race was just as close in the 4x200m where
Wethersfield won in 1:34.43 over Stamford (1:34.69) and
Bristol Central (1:34.84). Trumbull was the other relay
winner in the 4x400m with a time of 3:32.98.

Team Titles Up for Grabs at CIAC
State Open...
(Feb 21, 2003) When you
review all the Class meet results and compare performances, there are no
clear cut favorites in the chase for the CIAC State Open Team titles.
In the Girls team competition, defending champion Danbury is again going
to be closely challenged by Hillhouse and New Canaan. Individual races
to watch include the 1000m and 1600m where seniors Meghan Owen
(Killingly) and Abbey Sadowski (Griswold) will lead the fields. The 55m
dash should be exciting as top seeds Mallory Gattison (Career), Monique
Hodges (Wethersfield) and Debra Blake (Hillhouse) all try to make it to
the finals. Senior Chrissy McDevitt (Nonnewaug) will try again for
victories in the Long Jump and 55m Hurdles where she is defending
champion in both events. The relays always provide exciting races. The
4x800m features nationally-ranked Ridgefield High School. The 4x400m
features Hillhouse, Amity and Hall. The Sprint Medley pits Danbury
against Hall. The last event, 4x200m relay, may prove to be the deciding
factor in the team title race when Danbury and Hillhouse go head to
head.
The competition for the Boys State Open title will be just as difficult
for defending champion Danbury since their margin of victory in the
Class L meet was due largely to 20 points in the Pole Vault which seems
to be negated in the Open. But Danbury has the advantage over other
teams in that they have highly ranked athletes across many events that
may help them win the title. Other top teams that could challenge
Danbury for the team title include Bloomfield and Griswold. Griswold is
placing their hopes on their distance duo of Gavin Coombs and Reynolds
Chapman in the 1000m, 1600m and 3200m. Bloomfield is looking for a
double victory performance from senior Ken Walker in the 55m and 300m
dashes where he is defending champion. While Jerome Harris of Hamden
looks to defend his 55m Hurdle title, Matt Zagura of Ellington looks to
improve on last year' second place in the Shot Put. Rory Maxwell of
Sheehan leads the vaulters with a top vault of 14'2". The 4x800m relay
has seven teams within five seconds while a few seconds also separate
the top teams in the 4x400m relay as well. The 4x200m is too close to
call among the top teams where the baton exchanges will decide the race.
The 2003 CIAC Indoor Track and Field
State Open Meet is scheduled to start at 12:00pm on Saturday
at the New Haven Track & Field Center (Hillhouse High School).

RHAM Girls - Griswold Boys
-- CIAC Class S Champs...
(Feb 15, 2003) At the
CIAC Class S
Indoor Track and Field Championships at New Haven Track & Field
Center on 2-15-03, defending champion RHAM High School and first
time champ Griswold High School won the Girls and Boys team championships
respectively.
The RHAM High School Girls team used a well-balanced mix of individuals
and relays to win the Class S Championship for the second year over
Career HS, 53.5 to 44 points. The Sachems won the Sprint Medley, were
3rd in the 4x400m, 4th in the 4x200m and 6th in the 4x800m. RHAM also
had three individual winners: Meg Bouchard (600m), Sarah Bengston (High
Jump) and Jamie Kilis (ShotPut). Career HS was led by victories by
Mallory Gattison in the 55m and Nasha Cadette in the Long Jump.
Abbey Sadowski of Griswold was a top meet performer in winning the 1000m
and 1600m with record-setting performances. Jessica Broadwell of Bacon
Academy was the other record-breaker with a new mark in the Pole Vault.
The Griswold High School Boys scored 50 of its 53 points in distance
events to narrowly edge Sheehan (52.33pts). Griswold was led by three
record-setting performers; Reynolds Chapman in the 1000m and Gavin
Coombs in both the 1600m and 3200m. Coombs led four of his teammates in
the 1600m where Griswold earned 30 points. Sheehan was paced by Rory
Maxwell who set a record in the Pole Vault, a first place in the 4x200m
and a second place in the 4x800m relay.
Ken Walker of Bloomfield continued his dominance in the sprint events
with victories in the 55m and 300m dashes. Matt Zagura of Ellington
broke the Shot Put record on his way to winning the event.

Staples Boys - Hillhouse Girls
-- CIAC Class M Champs...
(Feb 15, 2003) At the
CIAC Class M
Indoor Track and Field Championships at New Haven Track & Field
Center on 2-15-03, defending champions Hillhouse High School and
Staples High School won the Girls and Boys team championships
respectively.
The Hillhouse HS Girls team used their strength in the sprint events to
speed their way to their fourth consecutive Class M Indoor Championship
with 66.5 points over rival New Canaan (39 pts). Hillhouse was led by
the winning trio of Deb Blake (55m, 4x200), Dominique Curtis (300,
4x400) and Jane Penn (600).
Several Class M records were set including two by Meghan Owen
(Killingly) in the 1000m and 1600m runs. Annie Duffy of Masuk set the
Pole Vault record at 8'6" while Lacey-Ann Parker of Ledyard set the Shot
Put record and also won the High Jump. Hillhouse set the new 4x200m
relay record as well.
The Boys Class M Team race was very close with Staples victory over
Wilton (50-47) undecided until the last 2 relays. Staples won the 4x400m
relay, defeating Wilton by a second, 3:39.22 to 3:40.28. In the last
event of the meet, the 4x200m Relay, Staples earned important points
when they placed fifth and scored two points to secure the championship.
Staples received valuable points from both Mike Kennedy, first in the
1000m, and Andrew Lawrence, second in the pole vault. Wilton countered
with victories by Pat Sweeney in the 600m and Paul Jarbee in the 1600m
but came up short by the end of the meet. Chase Pizzonia of Darien ran
to victory in the 3200m in a fast 9:33.81.

Danbury Double - CIAC Class L Crowns...
(Feb 15, 2003) At the
CIAC Class L
Indoor Track and Field Championships at New Haven Track & Field
Center on 2-14-03, defending champions
Danbury High School won both the Girls and Boys team championships.
The Danbury Girls (75pts) outscored runner-up Bunnell (32 pts) with five
first places; Lauren Dellavolpe (600m, anchor leg-Sprint Medley Relay),
Liz Calle (1600m, 2nd-3200m) and Susie Barb (55H and 4x200m Relay). The
Bunnell Girls team were powered to second by double-winner Chantal
Forrester (55m, 300m) and a new Class L Record of 9'0" by Jenn Heffernan
in the Pole Vault. It took a Class L record effort by the Ridgefield
4x800m team to win the race in 9:42.66 that eclipsed the mark set last
year by Danbury.
The Danbury Boys team used 20 points in the Pole Vault to score a 58-37
margin of victory over second place Manchester in the Boys Class L
Championships. Danbury vaulters were led by Leon Bruce (1st) with Jay
Juh (3rd) and Dave Rothlein (4th). Juh was also second in the Long Jump.
Danbury also had first places in the Sprint Medley Relay and the 600m
with Jon Kolodziej. In perhaps the most tightly contested race of the
evening, a photo-finish of the Boys 1000m saw three runners finish
within 12 hundredths of a second when Colin Walsh (Notre Dame-WH) edged
Owen McKenna (Xavier) and Ahmed Haji (Conard). Walsh's time of 2:34.00
was just ahead of McKenna (2:34.10) and Haji (2:34.12). Haji would later
come back to win the 3200m in 9:36.26.
