National Championships

Cabral Finishes 21st at Footlocker Finals...
(Dec 9, 2006) At the Footlocker Nationals today in San Diego CA, Donn Cabral of Glastonbury capped a fine season of cross country competition with a 21st place finish in 15:57 for the 5km course to represent the Northeast region. In a close dual to the finish, the winner was Chad Hall of Big Bear Lake HS, CA in 15:20 with the Northeast's Craig Forys second in 15:24 and teammate Steve Murdock was third in 15:25. The West region narrowly defeated the Northeast region for the team title by a 32 to 41 point margin.
In the Girls' Footlocker Nationals, Kathy Kroeger of Franklin TN outlasted Aurora Scott of Chesapeake VA in a time of 17:29 for the victory.

Connecticut Harriers at USATF National Junior Olympic XC Championships...
(Dec 9, 2006) After advancing through the state and regional qualifiers the past few weeks, three teams from the South Windsor Sports Group trekked to the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Cross Championships in Spokane WA on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006. The annual event sponsored by the USATF was held this year at the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex where 3k, 4k and 5k course were carved out of the four inches of snow. With the temperature at 35 degrees and the weather conditions worsening, Kylie McCartney ran as an individual qualifier in the Midget Girls division and finished the 3km course in 12:21 for 113 place overall. In the next race, the South Windsor Sports Group Youth Girls team started in a snow shower and ran to a 15th place finish out of 20 teams in a crowded 240 runner race over the 4km course with Emily Anderson (101-16:26), Julia Hickey (117-16:36), Andie Earwaker (132-16:48), Liz Knapp (144-17:01), Fiona Coleman (151-17:06) and Caitlin O'Connor (230-19:10). The winner was Kelly Robinson of the Ric Rojas Team in a time of 14:13.
The South Windsor Intermediate Girls team started and finished their race in a cold rain as Katherine Fitton ran to a strong 7th place in 18:48 for the 5km course as the team places sixth of eleven teams. Fitton was followed by Katherine Beam (36th-19:37), Andrea Walsh (58-20:18), Erica Forzley (64-20:27) and Lisa Sander (127-22:51). The race winner was Jacque Taylor of Santa Rosa Express in a time of 18:10.
The South Windsor Intermediate Boys Team also competed in the cold rain over the 5km course to finish in 13th place. Leading the way for the team was Chris Athas (85-17:43) followed by Chris Duclos (90-17:47), Matt Swan (98-17:55), Matt Velasquez (117-18:03) and Brody Secore (164-19:21). The race winner was Ryan Prentice of Federal Way in 16:01.

Regional Championships

Cabral Qualifies for Footlocker Finals...
(Nov 26, 2006) Junior Donn Cabral of Glastonbury has extended his 2006 cross country by another two weeks as he raced to a sixth place finish in the highly competitive Boys' Seeded Race at the Footlocker Northeast Regional on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, New York. Cabral, the State Open and New England champion, insured his ticket to the Footlocker Finals in San Diego on December 9th with a fast 15:23.6 effort over the 5km course, only several seconds behind winner Craig Forys of Howell NJ. Other Connecticut finishers in the top 100 finishers of the Seeded race were Andrew Judd of West Hartford (43-16:12), Adam Vess of Cromwell (60-16:25), Matt Terry of Danbury (83-16:37) and Everett Hackett of West Hartford (92-16:42).

In the Girls' Seeded Race, Connecticut's top finishers were Jamie Olson of Glastonbury with a fine 18:27.3 for 17th place, Courtney Dinnan of Hamden (52-19:07), Heather Stephens of Ridgefield (57-19:14), Caitlin Cannon of West Hartford (60-19:16), Christine Vogel of Glastonbury (61-19:17), Erica Hines of Enfield (76-19:27), Lilly Spratt of Old Lyme (82-19:34), and Dana Troy of Lebanon (88-19:38). The race was won by Neely Spence of Shippensburg PA in a time of 17:41.1.

Northeast Regional Footlocker Championships...
(Nov 19, 2006) Many Connecticut runners will be busy the Saturday after Thanksgiving as they travel to the Footlocker Northeast Regional races at Van Cortlandt Park NY. The Footlocker Northeast Regional races are slated for Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, New York. The full day of races start with the Boys Freshman Race at 9:45am and finish with the Senior Girls Race at 1:55pm. The highlight of the meet are the two Seeded races; Girls then Boys, where the region's top competitors will vie for one of the ten top places to qualify for the Footlocker Finals at Morely Field - Balboa Park in San Diego on Dec. 9, 2006.

Cabral and Danbury Lead State Boys to New England Championship Titles...
(Nov 11, 2006) Donald Cabral of Glastonbury secured his first New England Championship individual title on Saturday at Ponagansett High School in North Scituate, R.I. as Connecticut teams took six of the top nine team positions with Danbury declared the New England Team Champion followed by Glastonbury, each with 108 points.  Following in fifth place was New Milford (257pts), Newtown (273pts), Xavier (275pts) and Amity (303pts). Cabral was the first across the line in a fast 15:29 for the 5000m course. He was closely followed by Adam Vess of Xavier in 15:34. Connecticut also was represented by nine other finishers in the top twenty-five positions with Matt Terry (Danbury-4), Robert Dugger (Glastonbury-6), Scott Johnson (Old Lyme-8), Andrew Judd (Conard-9), Michael Levine (Joel Barlow-14), Everett Hackett -(Wm.Hall-15), Daniel Pilz (Newington-18), Wesley Halstead (Amity-22) and Richard Klauber (Thomaston-25).

Stephens and Glastonbury Top Finishers for State Girl at New England Championship...
(Nov 11, 2006) At the Girls New England Championships on Saturday at Ponagansett High School in North Scituate, R.I., Heather Stephens of Ridgefield ran 18:41 to finish in second place behind winner Georgia Griffin of Hanover, NH (18:31) on the 5000m course. Close behind in third place was Jamie Olson of Glastonbury in 18:42. Connecticut also has several other individuals in the top twenty-five positions included Courtney Dinnan (Hamden-5), Moira Kenney (Immaculate-6), Erica Hines (Fermi-10), Christine Vogel (Glastonbury-14), Kristin Mitchell (Glastonbury-16), Lilly Sprat (Old Lyme-18), Dana Troy (Lyman Memorial-20), Caitlin Cannon (Conard-24) and Emma Perron (Conard-25). In the race for the team title, Hanover NH won with 80 points as Glastonbury was the top Connecticut team in fifth place with 262 points. Simsbury was sixth (297pts), Lyman Memorial was seventh (317) followed by Ridgefield (12th), Guilford (15th) and Griswold (23rd).

State Open Champions Travel to New England Championships...
(Nov 10, 2006) A group Connecticut harriers consisting of the top twenty-five athletes and top six teams from the Boys and Girls State Open race are traveling to Ponaganset High School in Glocester RI. to compete in the 72nd New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championships, slated for Saturday, November 11, 2006.

In the New England Girls Championship, Connecticut is led by the top trio of State Open Champion Jamie Olson of Glastonbury, Heather Stephens of Ridgefield and Emma Perron of Conard-West Hartford. State Open Champion Lyman Memorial returns as the New England Champion to defend their title along with Simsbury, Glastonbury, Ridgdefield, Griswold and Guilford.

The Connecticut Boys are led by top individuals including State Champion Don Cabral of Glastonbury, Matt Terry of Danbury and Adam Vess of Xavier. Defending New England Champion Amity is joined by State Open Champion Danbury as well as Glastonbury, Newtown, Xavier and New Milford.

The Boy’s race will begin at 11:30 AM followed by the Girl’s race at 12:30 PM. The course is 5000 meters for both Boys and Girls consisting of well groomed grass fields and packed, processed gravel as it travels through the 90-acre campus of the Ponaganset High & Middle Schools. Coaches and spectators are able to view nearly 2/3 of the race very well, including getting back to the track area in plenty of time to see the finish. Olson Leads All to Finish - Lyman Memorial Claims Open Title...
(Nov 3, 2006) Lyman Memorial proved their worthiness of the top ranking in the State XC Poll by winning their first CIAC State Open Championship at Wickham Park in East Hartford CT.  Lyman Memorial placed three runners in the top 25 places to claim the title over first-time runner-up Simsbury by a 136 to 155 margin of victory. Lyman Memorial was led by Kelly Sorrell (9th), Dana Troy (10th) and Katherine Fitton (21st). Glastonbury was third, Ridgefield fourth, Griswold fifth and Guilford sixth to complete the teams qualifying for the New England Championships on Nov. 11, 2006 at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, Rhode Island.
In the race for the individual champion honors, senior
Jamie Olson of Glastonbury continued to dominate as she had all season with a course record 15:46 time over the new course to lead all finishers. Close behind were runner-up Heather Stephens of Ridgefield, Emma Perron of Conard in third, Erica Hines of Fermi in fourth, Kristin Mitchell of Glastonbury in fifth and Stacey Marion of Simsbury in sixth.

Danbury Wins Fourth Open Title - Cabral Fastest to Finishline...
(Nov 3, 2006) The 2006 Boys State Open field at Wickham Park in East Hartford was primed with several teams capable of winning but Danbury emerged as the victor with their fourth State Open title and first since 2001. Danbury received a second place effort from Matt Terry and a fifth place from Willie Ahearn while Joe Bubniak (21st) and Justin Rau (24th) helped to score 74 points as runner-up Glastonbury totaled a close 78 points. Glastonbury was led by individual champion junior Donald Cabral who ran 16:02 for the new course. He was followed by runner-up Terry, Adam Vess of Xavier (3rd), Andrew Judd of Conard (4th), Ahearn (5th) and Robert Dugger of Glastonbury (6th). The remaining teams qualifying for the New England Championships on Nov. 11, 2006 at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, Rhode Island include Newtown (3rd), Xavier (4th), Amity and New Milford tied for fifth.
