Newtown Stuns Field with Open Title -- Jay Koloseus Gives All in Win At 2005 Boys Open
(Nov 5, 2005) The sport of cross country is one of those sports where a team of seven can run to victory without ever having a star athlete in the top places. Newtown High School, which hadn't been to the winner's circle since the 1987-89 L Division championships, stunned the 2005 Boys State Open field at Wickham Park in East Hartford with their first ever State Open title. Newton, which was fourth at the LL meet last week and 2nd in their SWC meet, placed Alister Ratcliff, Eric MacKnight, and Zach Schwartz in the top 25 and Scott Nichols, Matt Cole, Ryan Morrissey and John Sullivan in the top 50 places to win with 109 points over favored Amity (119 points). In a reversal of last year's individual race, senior Jay Koloseus of Guilford gave a total effort to win over defending champion Tradelle Ward of Griswold. Koloseus just made it over the finish line in a fast 15:33 before he collapsed and had to be assisted in the finish line area. The other top six teams included New Milford, Glastonbury, Norwich Free Academy and Griswold.

State Open Qualifiers Make Final Preparations...
(Nov 3, 2005) With only one day to go, there is not much else a runner can do to prepare for the CIAC State Open to be held on Friday, November 4, 2005 at Wickham Park in East Hartford CT. The runner can't change the weather, the course or what other runners are going to do. The runner can only make sure to get enough rest, eat well, make sure that the legs remain quick and to make sure that they are mentally prepared for the challenge on Friday. For many of the top runners and teams, the State Open is the start of a journey down the road to regional and national competition. However, for the majority of the runners the State Open is the final race of the season. All the runners should be proud of their personal and team achievements that they have attained thus far in the season. The twenty-five All-State places, one State Champion slot and one State Team Champion title will be filled by those who trust all the preparations they have made and run from the heart, without doubt or self-imposed limits.

The Boys Race starts at 1:30pm while the Girls Race starts at 2:15pm. Coaches should check the CIAC Start Lists to make sure that all their entries are confirmed with the CIAC. Coaches should report any discrepancies to the Meet Directors,

Talent on Display at CIAC Divisional Races...
(Oct 29, 2005) On a perfect day for cross country (it wasn't raining) the CIAC Divisional Cross Country Meets were run at Wickham Park in East Hartford. CIAC Divisional Tests on Saturday...
(Oct 27, 2005) For many of the several hundred state harriers, Saturday, October 29 has been marked as a test date as important as any they have seen all season. Many will try to achieve their best performance as they try to help their teams capture team titles at the CIAC Divisional Cross Country Championships. For less than two dozen athletes, Saturday represents one more step towards individual goals of winning a State Class meet. Finally, each runner will try to set their own personal record on the challenging Wickham Park course, 5km for boys and 4km for girls.

A Letter of Congratulations to Coach Sue Curnias ...
(Oct 26, 2005) It is not very often that I have the opportunity to say congratulations to a leader among coaches and a friend who is being honored by her peers. I was first introduced to Sue McAuliffe Curnias over twenty years ago by my wife, Betty, who has been Sue's long time friend. Through personal and coaching involvement with her, I learned enough about Sue to be impressed by her thorough commitment to her student-athletes and her coaching abilities in cross country and outdoor track and field. At the 1986 State Class XC meet, I watched her first State Class L champion Meredith Gordon run to victory and a year later her team captured the Class L title over New Milford. In her 17 years as an outdoor coach and 27 years as a cross country coach, I was always impressed by her on-field demeanor with her athletes; one that commanded respect but yet helped her athletes keep their perspective through their triumphs as well as their disappointments.

Sue has always been dedicated to her profession, in the class room and on the track. In addition to her Health and Physical Education teaching and coaching responsibilities at William Hall High School in West Hartford, Sue has served on the CIAC track and gymnastics committees and with the CHSCA in both sports as well. She has also served as a vice president of the Connecticut Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; served on the Wethersfield Recreation Commission and the West Hartford Coaches Council.

It is no surprise that the Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) has chosen Sue for induction into their Hall of Fame since she is the only woman who has ever received the CHSCA coach of the year award in three different sports. Sue has also coached gymnastics for nine years at Hall, achieving a 78-37 record and a coach of the year award in 1980. She also earned coach of the year honors in Outdoor Track and Field in 1986 and in Cross Country in 1988. Her teams have captured 18 league titles, three state runner-up spots and 20 third or fourth-place finishes. Her most recent cross country champion was Ceara Danaher in 2002 and 2003 at the Class LL meet. Other accolades for Sue include an NHSACA Region I coach of the year in both track and cross country and she has been recognized by the Connecticut Track and Field Association and the National Federation national high school coach of the year in track and field (1992). She also coached swimming for two years at Conard High School (14-5). Sue is also slated for the Bo Kolinsky Award presented in November by the Wethersfield High School Hall of Fame for her contribution to high school athletics.

Congratulations Sue on your achievements and well deserved awards. Thank you for your dedication to the Connecticut high school sports scene over the past two decades.

Regards,
Ron Knapp, Owner - MySportsResults.com

NOTE: The CHSCA Hall of Fame Dinner is slated for Thursday, Nov. 10 (6 p.m. reception, 7 p.m. dinner) at the AquaTurf Club in Southington. Tickets are $35 and can be ordered from John Fontana at 860-628-4122. More information on other inductees is available at the CHSCA website.
