New England XC Championships: 466, Snow: 0...
(Nov 14, 2004) The few inches of snow that covered Wickham Park in East Hartford did not prevent the start of New England Interscholastic Cross Country Championships, merely delayed it by an hour in order for the bright sunny skies to melt some of it from the course. In the regional meet hosted by Connecticut on Saturday, November 13, 2004, two host state teams and an individual ran away with New England championship titles that saw 466 competitors and 48 teams overcome the tough competition and course conditions. Since the snow prevented safe ascent of the famed Green Monster hill at Wickham Park, all the runners were rerouted onto a road that runs parallel with it; adding about 100 meters to the course.
Thorne and New Milford CT Capture New England Boys Titles...
In the first race of the day, senior
Cory Thorne of Portsmouth NH didn't let the less than perfect course conditions alter his race plans as he captured the 70th New England Boys Championship in 16:06 on the altered 5km course. Thorne was continually challenged by a group of runners that included Levi Miller of Belfast ME (2nd-16:15), Tradelle Ward of Griswold CT (3rd-16:17), Vinny Olsen of Londonderry NH (4th-16:25) and Jay Koloseus of Guilford CT (5th-16:26). In the race for the team title, defending champion New Milford CT placed four runners in the top twenty places to score 87 points and outdistance runner-up Londonderry NH with 101 points and third place East Lyme CT (183 points). New Milford was propelled to the team title by Nick DeCrescenzo, Dave Hunt, Pat Vicklund, Mike DeCrescenzo,  John Reilly, Tony Vento and Tony Socotch.

Ridgefield CT and Schumacher Victorious in New England Girls Race...
For only the second time in the running of the New England Girls Championship since its inception in 1977 has a Connecticut team captured the team title. For the third weekend in a row, the
Ridgefield CT team won at Wickham Park on the 5km course to capture the New England title with 105 points to defeat highly-touted Champlain Valley Union VT (154 points). Lyman Memorial CT was the surprise third place team with 162 points.  Ridgefield joined Norwich Free Academy (1995 champs) in the New England winner's circle as they placed five of its runners in the top 31 spots. Ridgefield was led by Heather Stevens, Elly Teitsworth, Megan Holmes, Lean Rosenfeld, Elizabeth Navarro, Caroline Davis and Catherine Murdoch. New England Championship history was also enriched as junior Amie Schumacher of Holy Cross CT used her experience and tenacity to overcome Elise Moody-Roberts of Cape Elizabeth ME to win her second consecutive New England Girls Championship individual title. Schumacher joins an elite group of runners who have won the race twice or more. A list that includes Cathy Schiro O'Brien (NH), Liz Mueller (CT), Erin Sullivan (VT) and Meghan Owen (CT). Moody-Roberts led Schumacher much of the race until she headed off the course for a few meters in the last mile. The mistake enabled Schumacher to continue her acceleration past Moody-Roberts where she held off the ME sophomore in an exciting duel over the last 300 meters to the finish. Schumacher finished in 19:05 with Moody-Roberts several steps behind in 19:07. Connecticut took four more places in the top ten with Caitlin Cunningham of Simsbury (3rd-19:29), Kelly Sorrell of Lyman Memorial (4th-19:36) Emma Perron of Conard-West Hartford (5th-19:36) and Kristin Mitchell of Glastonbury (8th-19:44).

While the New England Boys Championship features the return of the defending team champion, New Milford CT, and runner-up team, Ledyard CT. but does not feature a returning individual champion as two-time winner Ahmed Haji, formerly of Conard-West Hartford, is now a freshman harrier at Providence College. The top individuals who will vie for the top spot include those from Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut. Individuals who should be in the lead pack include state champion Guor Majak of Concord NH and Cory Thorne of Portsmouth NH. In last year's New England race, Thorne was 5th and Guor was 8th. Maine is represented by the brother duo who finished 1-2 in their state meet; Ayalew Taye and Sintayehu of Portland HS. Analew placed 16th in last year's meet; Eric Giddings, (5th last year) won't be competing due a stress fracture. Also returning from last year is senior Levi Miller of Belfast; he placed 9th in 2003. Also expected to be in the lead pack are Connecticut's top finishers from last week, Tradelle Ward of Griswold, Jay Koloseus of Guilford and Phil Mitchell of Glastonbury.
The New England Girls Championship race features the return of the 2003 champion, Amie Schumacher of Holy Cross. She will be challenged on her home 5k course Samantha Gawrych of Westerly RI, Katie Chwasciak of Merrimack Valley NH as well as Maine's top harriers Old Town junior Cassie Hintz and Cape Elizabeth sophomore Elise Moody-Roberts. Schumacher also faces a challenge from our own Caitlin Cunningham of Simsbury and sophomore Kelly Sorrell of Lyman Memorial. The team title chase is open as Manchester Central, NH looks to improve upon their 3rd place finish from last year while Open champion Ridgefield provides the home state challenge.
