State's Top Runners at 54th Greater Hartford XC
Meet
(Oct 5, 2003) Although the
54th Greater Hartford XC Meet is a smaller meet in comparison to some
other giant meets, several of the state's top-caliber runners provided
the many spectators with exciting, record-setting performances. Course
records were established by Ahmed Haji of Conard and Orlaith Cunningham
of Branford on the new West Hartford Reservoir 5k course, a
challenging combination of road and trail, up and down hills.

Editorial Note: Actions of a Few Impact
Image of the Many...
(Oct 5, 2003) I've been a
fan of the sport of cross country for more than 25 years, having
participated, coached, been both a meet director and parent of a runner.
I had always admired the coaches ability to instill good work habits and
high moral and ethical values in their athletes in a difficult sport.
Which makes an incident at the 54th Greater Hartford Meet harder to
believe -- why would anyone from the participating teams walk off with
eight small cones that marked the course? The cones were taken before
the end of the last boys race, before everyone had finished. The cones
are marked with my initials, bought with my own money and are used for
meets, indoor, outdoor and xc, where I volunteer my time to help
officiate. My excitement over the meet and the great performances has
been dampened by this incident.
Please contact me using the Contact Button in the left-side margin to
provide any information on the return of the cones.
