Sprint Power Propels Bloomfield to
Class-M Girl's Title...
(June 1, 2006) The right
mixture of veteran and youth sprinters was enough to power the
Bloomfield Girls Team to victory in the Class M Championships at
Veterans Stadium in New Britain CT on Wednesday. Bloomfield out sprinted
runner-up teams Tolland and Weston by a 91 to 63 score in the eighteen
event meet. Sophomore Stacey-Ann Smith led a 1-2-3 attack in the
100m dash as she was followed across the line by Catherine Milledge
and Julliane Peters. Smith then came back with the fastest meet
time in 26 years in the 200m where she broke one of the oldest meet
records with a winning time of 24.91. The 1980 record of 25.2 had been
set by Lorraine Dortch of New London. Smith had plenty of help from her
teammates as Milledge won the 300m Hurdles with Valeen Tyrell in
third, Kristen Johnson first in the High Jump, Ashley Carbray
first in the Long Jump and second in the Triple Jump. While Bloomfield
also placed third in the 4x400m Relay, their speedy 4x100 relay was
disqualified for a zone violation. Weston was paced by victories from
their 4x800m and 4x400m relay teams as well as a win by Rebecca Fine
in the 800m run. Fine edged freshman Anna Shields of Lewis Mills
who won both the 1600m and 3200m races. Tolland received a first place
effort from Jeni Schatzlein in the Triple Jump.

Nixon's Records Drive
Hyde School to Class-S Boy's Title...
(May 31, 2006) The two
record performances by James Nixon in the 100m and 200m sprints
were the icing on the cake as the Hyde School-New Haven claimed the
Class S Team title at Manchester High School on Tuesday. Nixon's first
meet record came in the preliminary race of the 100m where he sped to a
10.71 clocking to break his 10.79 record effort from last year. Nixon
then lowered his 200m dash record from 2005 of 21.79 to 21.65 to win the
event. Nixon had plenty of help as Howard Rumley won the Long
Jump (22-8) and was 2nd in the 200m while Sidney Cummings won the
Triple Jump and Bruce Campbell won both the Shot Put and Discus Throw.
Hyde's hurdle duo of Rob Walker and D'Yonne Crudup ran 2-3
in the 110m Hurdles behind Chris Gliha of East Hampton and then
scored 1-2 in the 300m Hurdles. Hyde also scored a victory in the 4x10m
relay. Matt Totten of Shepaug Valley won the High Jump at 6'2".

news for the Simsbury coaching staff is that Meghan Cunningham
