Simsbury Girls and
Hall Boys Repeat as Team Champions at 75th
Greater Hartford Outdoor T&F Meet...
(Apr
29, 2006)
In repeat team performances from last year, the Simsbury Girls Team
and the Hall-West Hartford Boys Team captured the top team place
at the 75th
Greater Hartford Outdoor Track and Field Meet at Manchester High School.
Simsbury out-pointed runner-up Weaver, 180 to 83 points while Hall
outscored second place Wethersfield, 122 to 91 points. The oldest
outdoor meet in the state also recorded several meet records as well as
a tie for a State record.
In the first event of the meet, the Wethersfield Boys 4x800m relay
recorded the first meet record as they ran 8:17.37 to eclipse the former
record of 8:26.44 that their team set last year. The second meet record
to fall was recorded by the Weaver in the second track event of the day,
the 4x100m Relay. Weaver broke the record of 50.70 set by
Hartford Public in 1995 with a time of 49.67. The record setting
continued as Alasia Griebel of Bristol Central won the 1600m Run,
the third final event of the meet, with a record time of 5:11.23. The
former record of 5:13.2 was set by Chelsea Lenge of Conard in 2000. In
the finals of the 100m Hurdles, Sashauna Stewart of Weaver set a
meet record of 14.75 to better the time set last year by Samantha Kelly
of Simsbury. The Boys 100m Dash final was a tie that even the photo
timer couldn't break as both KeKe Easterling of Conard and
Persis Oware of Wethersfield crossed the line in 10.83. In the Girls
300m Hurdles, Clervine Sanon of Weaver established a new meet
record of 44.75 to break the 1995 time of 44.92 set by Tynisha Teal of
Prince Tech. The final record of the day came in the Girls Pole Vault as
Abby Petersen of Simsbury cleared 11'-0" to set a meet record as
well as tie the State record held by Daniella Ponte of Torrington.
Simsbury also had winning performances by Chavous Armstrong in
the Long Jump, Samantha Kelly in the Triple Jump, Andrea
Topalis in the 3200m Run, Maggie Glass in the 800m run and
Pam Newell in the 100m Dash.
The Hall Boys team were led to the team title with wins by
Evan Orgen in the 110m Hurdles, Everett Hackett in the 1600m
Run, Andrew Veal in the Javelin Throw and Rene Coleman in
the Long Jump.

Irv Black Invite
- Close Competition
Overshadows Poor Weather ...
(Apr 22, 2006)
In a typical reversal of early New England
weather, rain and cold hampered many of those competing at the final
session of the
2nd Annual Irv Black High School Invitational
held at the Trinity College Track facility on Saturday. In a complete
reversal from the sunny and warm weather at the meet on Friday, athletes
not only had to contend with each other but the elements as well. In the
first finals of the day, Everett Butler of Windsor and Chelsea
Jubrey of Rockville claimed 100m Dash victories. In the 2000m
Steeplchase, senior Kelsey LeBuffe of Wm Hall led all runners
over the barriers for a win in 7:28.85. The 4x100m relays top places
were won the Bloomfield Girls and the Wethersfield Boys
teams. The Boys 1600m wasn't decided until the finish photo was read as
Mike McSherry of Amity edged Josh Robertson of NFA by a
scant 1-hundreth of a second, 4:33.95 to 4:33.96. Jamie Olson of
Glastonbury was the clear victor in the Girls 1600m in 5:12:38. In
the always tough 400m race, Corey Mosley of Amity (50.70) and
Kate Backel of Conard (59.31) emerged with gold medals. Chris
Bogie of Darien captured both the Boys 110 and 400m Hurdle races.
The 800m always provides excitement and the boys and girls races were
closely contested. The Boys 800m finish was also a photo finish as RJ
Simeone of Farmington edged Marsid Tushe of Wethersfield,
2:00.62 to 2:00.67. In the Girls 800m race, Emma Perron of Conard
had a little more space at the finish to edge Danielle Loughrey of
Suffield, 2:20.86 to 2:22.56. In the Boys 200m Dash, Tyler
O'Brien of Rocky Hill won in 22:52 while Bloomfield swept 1-2 with
Stacey-Ann Smith and Catherine Milledge. Alasia Griebel of
Bristol Central ran another solid effort of 11:22.14 in the 3200m
Run for the victory. The Wethersfield Boys team also took the
4x400m relay while Bloomfield battled Conard to take the Girls
4x400m Relay in 4:07.76 to 4:09.60. In the soggy and slippery field
events, winners from Friday also came back to take top spots as
Ashley Carbray of Bloomfield won the Girls Triple Jump, Leanne
Crockett of Manchester took first in the Discus Throw, Justin
Wilson of Windsor leaped to first in the Triple Jump and Damian
Silverstrim of Amity tossed the Shot 52-11 for his second victory of
the weekend.

at the Veterans' Stadium, located at Willowbrook Park in New Britain
Connecticut. The newly refurbished Irv Black Track is an 8-lane, 400m
mondo surface track, including the runways for the long jump, triple

and the 2006 New England Interscholastic Meet. There are slight changes
to the meet schedule from last year where competition commences at
9:30am on Saturday, May 13, 2006.
With your help,
Meet Director Lindy Remigino once again will assemble a
high caliber field of competitors for a meet that has been recognized
nationally as one of the top springtime meets on the East Coast.
It will include athletes from
fourteen states: Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey,
Massachusetts, Vermont, Maryland, Pennsylvania. New Hampshire, Maine,
Virginia, Kentucky, Washington DC and Delaware as well as Canada.

Bryan Scotland (St. Benedict) and Rob Novak (Bordentown), Walter Henning
(St. Anthonys) in the Hammer Throw (217-8) and Matt Maloney (LaSalle
