Coombs Takes Mile
Run in Record Style at adidas Outdoor Championships...
(June
20, 2004) All-American miler Gavin Coombs of Griswold unleashed a
scorching kick from 200m to pass a talented field of high school milers
to win the Boys 1-mile in 4:05.72 at the adidas Outdoor Championships. His performance established a new Connecticut state
record for the 1-mile, breaking his record from last year's national
meet where he placed ninth in 4:10.55. On Saturday night, Coombs passed last lap leader
Victor Gras of Belmont MA (4:06.39) to take the victory where the first
six finishers dipped under 4:10 for the 1-mile race. In the final day of
the meet, several other Connecticut athletes performed well in the
national competition including:
+ James Roy of Simsbury placed third in the Javelin Throw with a
toss of 193'1". Robert Lasko of Branford placed seventh with a
throw of 189'4".
+ Shanea Calhoun of Wilbur Cross placed 5th in the 200m with a
time of 24.14.
+ Kaitlyn Whitlock of Bethel placed 9th in the 400m Hurdles with
a time of 1:02.71 to establish a new state record. The old record of
1:03.82 was held by Tamara Highsmith.
+ Myles Bradley of NFA placed 7th in the Triple Jump with a leap
of 47'3.5".
+ Emma Perron of Conard placed 9th in the Freshman 1-mile run in
5:19.87.
+ Tamara Highsmith of East Haven placed 9th in the Triple Jump
(37'2.5").

Day-1 of adidas Outdoor Championship...
(June 19, 2004) Many of the
Connecticut athletes who journeyed to North Carolina State University
campus in Raleigh should have been acclimated to the hot and humid
conditions they performed under in the Friday night competition. They
had to contend with the nation's best athletes as well. Some of the top
performances recorded by state athletes on Friday included:
+ Ahmed Haji of Conard West Hartford in the seeded 2-mile where he
finished 9th in 9:08.82. The race featured a winning time of 8:45.44 by
Shadrack Kipttoo and the top five under 9 minutes.
+ Shanea Calhoun of Wilbur Cross finished 7th overall in the 100m with a
clocking of 12.20 behind winner Cleo Tyson in 11.52. Shantea Calhoun
runs 12.28 in prelims.
+ Derin Kozlowski of Woodstock Academy finishes in a tie for 6th with a
5'5" effort in the Girls High Jump.
+ Tahari James of Branford long jumps 18'1.75" for 10th. Whitney Tagliavini
of Suffield jumps 17'7" - 16th.
+ Amie Schumacher of Holy Cross finishes the 2-mile in 11:04.
+ Wilbur Cross Girls' 4x100m - 48.99 for 14th
+ Ridgefield Girls' 4x800m - 9:28.83 - 14th
+ Jennifer Krodel of East Lyme places 13th in Hammer Throw with effort
of 124'8".
+ Steve Cherry (10.96) and Shante Wynn (11.22) of Cromwell in 100m
preliminary heats.
+ Hillhouse Boys 4x200m place 7th in 1:28.72 and 4x100m finishes 11th in
42.47. Danbury 4x200m 1:30.46 for 12th.
+ Manchester Boys 4x800m relay finishes in 7:58.85 for 13th.
+ Myles Bradley of NFA long jumps 21'6" for 24th.
Top Athletes Travel
to adidas Outdoor Championship...
(June 17, 2004) A
contingent of top state athletes will be making their way to the Paul
Derr Track on the North Carolina State University campus for the Adidas
Outdoor Championships, the unofficial high school championships, that
will be contested on June 18 and 19th. Top men competitors from
Connecticut that are on the AOC Entry list include Gavin Coombs in the
1-mile, Ahmed Haji in the 2-mile, Steve Cherry in the 100m and 200m,
Shante Wynn in the 100m, Graham Snow and Chris McDermott in the 800m,
Chase Pizzonia in the 2k Steeplechase, Claude Green in the High Jump,
Myles Bradley in the Long and Triple Jumps and Luca Burbank in the
Javelin. Some of the best women athletes from Connecticut who are listed
on the AOC Entry list include Shanea Calhoun in the 100m and 200m,
Shantea Calhoun in the 100m, Amie Schumacher in the 1-mile and 2-mile,
Tamara Highsmith in the 100m and 400m Hurdles and Triple Jump, Natasha
Harvey in the 100m Hurdles, Kaitlyn Whitlock in the 400m Hurdles, Derin
Kozlowski in the High Jump, Nasha Cadette, Whitney Tagliavini and Tahari
James in the Long Jump, James and Katherine Harty in the Triple Jump,

East Haven Sweep -
Coates and
Highsmith Multi-Event Champs...
(June 16, 2004) After two
hot and humid days of competition in the CIAC Mens' Decathlon and Womens'
Heptathlon Championships at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, Robert
Coates and Tamara Highsmith of East Haven emerged as champions.
Coates vaulted into the hunt for the title when day-one leader Erik
Thunberg of Fitch failed to clear a height in the Pole Vault and scored
zero points. The speedy Coates scored his highest points in the 100m,
110m Hurdles and 400m. Coates cleared 11'5" in the Pole Vault to help
pave the way to the 2004 title with 6220 points. Runner-up Jacob
Eanniello of Torrington was second with 5984 points. The remaining
top six finishers were Mike Miller of EO Smith, Nathan Scott of East
Hartford, Erik Thunberg of Fitch and Terry Barresi of Lyman Hall.
In the Womens' Heptathlon Championship, Tamara Highsmith of East
Haven never looked back as she maintained her 300point lead to win
over Jamie Killis of RHAM, 4628 to 4340 points. Although Killis
made a late charge with better performances in the Long Jump and Javelin
Throw, the final 800m event was crucial. Highsmith used a 2:32 effort to
secure the win over Killis, who ran a 2:46. The top finishers included
Keisha Regular of Staples, Nora Miller of Middletown, Jessica
Broadwell of Bacon Academy, and Kerryn MacDonald of Old Saybrook.

Krause Takes 2nd
Open Title with 3k Steeple Win,
Smith Tops in Hammer Throw...
(June 16, 2004) State Open
3200m champion David Krause of Amity overcame hot conditions and
close competition to win the Mens' 3000m Steeplechase Championship today
at Trinity College in Hartford CT. Krause finished in 9:51.31 to take
the title and was followed by Chris Green of Berlin in 10:04.29,
Hunter Norte of Ellington, Bradley Dion of Hand, Christopher Walsh of
Amity and Andrew Percy of Amity.
In the Mens' Hammer Throw Championship, Brandon Smith of Hand
improved from his tenth place finish a year ago to win with a toss of
131'9". Runner-up Jesse Breault of Amity was only two inches less
with a throw of 131'7". Finishing in the remaining top places were Ed
Gaug of Southington, Sean Gallagher of Haddam Killingworth, Marcin
Moscicki of Bunnell and Thomas Spada of East Lyme.

Danaher Wins
Inaugural 2k Steeplechase, Krodel Repeats in Hammer Throw...
(June 16, 2004) Senior
Ceara Danaher of Hall-West Hartford won the inaugural Womens' 2000m
Steeplechase Championship at Trinity College in Hartford CT. Her time of
7:21.32 established a State record in the new event; the previous best
effort of 7:24.7 was run by Katie Duffy of Masuk last year at Danbury.
Senior Allison Croft of Ellington was second with Sarah
Sweeney of Seymour, Ashley O'Brien of East Windsor, Elizabeth Foster of
Ellington and Shamika Witcher of Wilbur Cross completing the
top six places.
Junior Jennifer Krodel of East Lyme defended her CIAC Hammer
Throw title with a 133'1" throw that improved her effort from last year
by over 21-feet. Teammates Tess Kohanski, Garynn Jackson and Margaret
Gianquinto placed second, fourth and sixth respectively. Jane
D'Addario of Farmington placed third and Nicole Mastrianni of
Derby placed fifth.

Thunberg and
Highsmith Take 1st Day Leads...
(June 16, 2004) After the
first day of competition in the CIAC Mens' Decathlon and Womens'
Heptathlon Championships at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, junior
Erik Thunberg of Fitch and Tamara Highsmith of East Haven
lead the competition. Thurnberg's 3341 points in the 100m, Long Jump,
Shot Put, High Jump and 400m provided a slim margin over second place
Robert Coates of East Haven (3335pts) and Terry Barresi of Lyman
Hall (3307pts). Senior Highsmith led her closet competitors with
2892 points in the day-one events, 100 Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put and
200m. Senior Jamie Killis of RHAM scored 2571 points and Nora
Miller of Middletown finished with 2531 points for the first four
events.

Bradley Powers NFA
to Mens' Open Title...
(June 9, 2004) On a
sweltering afternoon, Norwich Free Academy continued its' winning ways
from last week's Class LL victory using only four athletes in five
events to capture the 2004 CIAC State Open Championship on Tuesday at
Veterans' Stadium in New Britain. Junior Myles
Bradley powered his way to victories in the 110m Hurdles and the
Long Jump as well as a second place in the Triple Jump to lead NFA to
the team title with 65 points over runner-up Danbury with 49 points.
Teammates Derrick Way won the Triple Jump and placed third in the
Long Jump while James Justice won the Javelin and placed second
in the Long Jump. Vincent Healy completed the scoring for NFA in
the Pole Vault with a sixth place finish.
Meet highlights included:
- a double win by senior Steve Cherry of Cromwell in the 100m and
200m dashes,
- a new Open record by Wethersfield in the 4x100m Relay team of
Paul Cavalieri, Justin
Scricca, Persis Oware and Justin Harris with a time of 42.12 that
bettered the 2003 Bloomfield mark of 42.46.
- Senior All-Americans Gavin Coombs of Griswold and Ahmed Haji
of Conard West Hartford won close races; Coombs in the 800 with a
1:53.49 and Haji finishing in 4:17.15 in the 1600m as they both prepare
for the Adidas National Meet later this month.
- Senior David Krause of Amity unleashed a blistering last lap to
win the 3200m in a near-record 9:18.05.

Open Dash Sweep by
Calhoun Sisters Lead Wilbur Cross to Womens' Title...
(June 9, 2004) In exciting
performances to match the hot weather, Shanea and Shantea Calhoun of
Wilbur Cross completed a first-ever sibling sweep of the 100m, 200m
and 400m dashes to propel Wilbur Cross to their third consecutive CIAC
State Open Championship title on Tuesday at Veterans' Stadium in New
Britain. The 4x800m Relay team started the Cross title hunt with a
second place finish behind winner Ridgefield. Shanea Calhoun started the
dash sweep with a record-breaking 11.82 100m dash victory; just ahead of
Shantea in 11.83. Both were under the 1997 record of 11.84 set by Shayla
Wallace of NW Catholic. Shantea continued the dash sweep with a 55.32
win in the 400m that broke the Open record of 56.03 set by Karen Francis
in 1993. The next two finishers, Shanea Calhoun (55:48) and Sharelle
Green of New London (55.98) were also under the old record. Shanea
completed the dash sweep with a 24.38 clocking with Shantea close in
second at 24.39.
Wilbur Cross finished with 65 points for the team title while Simsbury
was runner-up with 33 points.
Other notable performances included:
- Tahari James of Branford broke the 21-year old Open and State record of 19'7"
in the Long Jump held by Kelly Connolly with a leap of 19'8" that
reinforced her state record effort from the indoor season.
- Daniela Ponte of Torrington continued her state dominance in
the Pole Vault with an Open record performance of 10'6" to break Leah
Williams 10'2" mark from 2002.
- Tamara Highsmith of East Haven captured both the 100m Hurdles
(14.56) and the Triple jump (38'6").
- Amie Schumacher of Holy Cross scored an impressive win in the
1600m run with a time of 5:04.01.
- Anja Kriege-Redwood of Greenwich used well executed surges on
the fifth lap (83 sec) and the last lap (79 sec) of the 3200m to pull
away from Schumacher to win in 11:06.06.

Womens' Results...
Old Saybrook Girls
Repeat and Hyde Boys Regain S Meet Titles...
(June 3, 2004) At Veterans'
Stadium in New Britain, the Old Saybrook Girls team narrowly defeated
Haddam Killingworth 128 to 125 points to capture their second
consecutive Class S Championship. The Hyde School of New Haven returned
to the top spot at the Class S Meet after a one year absence by
outscoring Cromwell 83 to 76.50 points. The Old Saybrook Girls team was
led by wins from Kerryn MacDonald in the 100m and 300m Hurdles
and High Jump as well as victories by Megan Fitzgerald in the
400m and the 4x400m Relay.
In the Boys' Class S Meet, the Hyde School regained the title
with a well rounded attack in both track and field events that saw their
only victories in the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays. Steve Cherry of
Cromwell continued to show that he is one of the best in the state
as he broke records he set last year in the 100m (10.83-Preliminary
round) and the 200m (21.86). Shante Wynn of Cromwell was a
double winner in the Long and Triple Jumps as was Mike Paradis of Old
Saybrook in the Shot Put and Discus.

Coombs' Triple
Paces Griswold Boys and Ellington Girls Win First M Meet...
(June 3, 2004) Senior
All-American Gavin Coombs of Griswold led his team to the State
Class M Meet with victories in the 1600m, 800m and 3200m races on
Wednesday at Manchester High School. Coomb's time of 4:16.95 in the
1600m established a new Class M record. In the 800m, Coombs led a 1-2-3
sweep as Tradelle Ward and Chris Croft contributed to
Griswold's 76 points. A.I. Prince Tech of Hartford was runner-up with
66.50 points while Bloomfield was a close third with 66 points.
Bloomfield was paced by double-winner Kory Sheets in the 100m and
200m dashes. The Ellington 4x800m Relay team improved on their record
from last year in winning with a time of 8:08.44.
The Ellington Girls team won their first Class M title with a
71.50 point effort to defeat the 2003 champion Nonnewaug. Ellington was
lead by wins by Elizabeth Foster in the 800m, senior Allison
Croft in the 1600m and 3200m, the 4x400m Relay, and
Latasha Jarrett in the High Jump. Natasha Harvey of Career HS
established a new record in the 100m Hurdles (14.60) as well as winning
with record performances the 300m Hurdles and Long Jump. Teammate Nasha Cadette set the
new mark in the Triple Jump with a leap of 36'9.25". Jessica
Broadwell of Bacon Academy set a Pole Vault record with a 10'6"
effort.

Close Title Races
in L Meet - East Lyme Boys and Simsbury Girls Prevail...
(June 3, 2004) In a close
meet to the final event of the day, the Simsbury Girls team used
the 4x400m Relay second place finish to outscore runner-up Wilbur Cross,
92 to 86 points for the Class L title. Simsbury was led by 46 points
from freshman Meghan Cunningham and junior Caitlin Cunningham
to overcome a 54 point effort from Wilbur Cross' Shanea and Shantea
Calhoun in the 100m, 200m and 400m dashes. Simsbury also won the
first event of the day, the 4x800m, in a record 9:33.91. The meet also
marked the first time that a Connecticut girl has vaulted 11 feet as
Daniela Ponte of Torrington set a Class L and State Record in the
Pole Vault with a 11'0" effort.
In the Boys meet, Easy Lyme High School used their depth across
several events to win 92 to 82 over Staples. East Lyme used victories in
the 4x100m Relay and wins by Joshua Rivera in the Shot and Discus
to earn the Class L title. Meet records were set by Staples in
the 4x400m Relay (3:22.97) and Notre Dame-West Haven in the
4x800m Relay (8:03.72). Jacob Eanniello of Torrington broke the
Pole Vault record set in 1981 with a vault of 14'2.25".

Propel Lyman Hall Boys...
New Canaan Girls are Tops Again at
State Class MM Meet...
(June 2, 2004) It has been
nearly a decade since the Lyman Hall High School Boys' team had won an
Outdoor title while the New Canaan Girls team captured their fourth
consecutive Class MM title on Tuesday at Veterans' Stadium in New
Britain.
Lyman Hall outscored defending champion Ledyard, 87 to 69.50 points to
win the 2004 Class MM title. Lyman Hall's last title win was the Class L
title in 1995. Lyman Hall's middle distance leader Tim Clark set
two individual Class MM records in the 800m (1:56.41) and the 1600m
(4:20.28) while joining teammates Matt Cummings, Zak Ibozrar, and
Matt Pasquariello to set a 4x800m Relay record of 8:03.22. Lyman
Hall also received first place efforts from Brian McWeeney in the
300m Hurdles and Nick Redman in the Javelin. Two other meet
records were established as Chase Pizzonia of Darien ran 9:20.51
for the 3200m to better his mark of last year and the Wethersfield
quartet of Paul Cavalieri, Justin Scricca, Persis Oware, and
Justin Harris ran 41.16 for the 4x100m Relay record.
The New Canaan Girls' Team won a close team race with North Haven
by a 69.50 to 64 point margin. In winning their fourth Class MM title in
a row, New Canaan was led with first place efforts from Julie McClane
in the 100m Hurdles, Katrina Nietsch in the 800m, Kristin
Rossi in the Pole Vault and the 4x800m Relay team of Avery Cole,
Tory Glerum, Becky Kimball, and Adele Maass. Amie
Schumacher of Holy Cross was a double winner in both the 1600m and
3200m runs. Kaitlyn Whitlock of Bethel established a new record
in the 300m Hurdles with a time of 44.80.

NFA Takes Two at
State Class LL Meet...
(June 2, 2004) The cool,
wet
weather didn't dampen the competitive spirit of teams from Norwich Free Academy
as they won
both Boys and Girls CIAC State Class LL titles at Manchester High
School on Tuesday.
After finishing second in the past two years, the NFA Boys team
scored 108.50 points to outpace Amity and defending champion
Danbury who both scored 78 points. NFA was led by junior Myles
Bradley who captured the Long Jump (22'6"), Triple Jump (46'9.25")
and 110m Hurdles (14.44). NFA also received a first place effort from
James Justice in the Javelin (178'4"). Vince Healy, Ron Leask
and Aaron Paradis provided NFA with 15 valuable points in
the Pole Vault. There was only one record set when the Stamford
4x100m Relay team of Jamar Davis, Eric Jenkins, Carl Mitchell, and
Dontay Wilson ran 42.74 to eclipse the 1983 mark of 42.75 set by
Notre Dame.
The NFA Girls team returned to the top spot at the Class LL Meet after a
two year hiatus; previously they had an eight year streak of Class LL
titles from 1994 through 2001. NFA scored 94.18 points to narrowly defeat
runner-up William Hall High School of West Hartford with 84.09 points
and defending champion Danbury with 83.50 points. NFA scored
two-thirds of their points in the field events where Amy Janciewicz
led with a Class LL record of 10'9" in the Pole Vault and junior
Katherine Dauria won the Triple Jump (35'9.5"), 800m (2:19.85) and
placed fifth in the Long Jump. Khabria Hundley of Hamden was a
double-winner in sweeping the 100m and 200m dashes. The other meet
record was established by the Ridgefield 4x800m Relay team of Rebecca
Chain, L. Elizabeth Fleming, Caitlin Helgesen, and Leah Rosenfeld
who ran 9:26.89 to better the record Ridgefield set last year.View

Narrow Victories by
NFA Girls and Boys in ECC Championships...
(May 24, 2004) Although the
weather was cooler than normal on Saturday, the competition was heated
as Norwich Free Academy completed a sweep of the Boys and Girls titles
at the Eastern Connecticut Conference Championships. The NFA Girls team
narrowly defeated Fitch High School, 127.5 to 127 points while the NFA
Boys team outscored East Lyme High School 150.5 to 148 points.
