Under the Lights at
Manchester Tonight...
(May 21, 2004) State track
and field athletes get a rare opportunity to run under the lights at the
Manchester Midnight Invite tonight at Manchester High School. The meet
is not really at midnight but Meet Director Dan Uriano decided on the
catchy name since the meet runs from 6:00pm to about 10:00pm. The meet
features many of the typical relay events, but also includes a Distance
Medley Relay that is not widely contested in Connecticut but is at the
national level. About two dozen schools are expected to compete from
around the state.

Hot Competition at
Journal Inquirer
Meet...
(May 16, 2004 - 9:30am) The
heat and humidity on Saturday didn't deter the athletes from breaking a
number of meet records at the 23rd Journal Inquirer Track and Field Meet
at Manchester High School in Manchester CT. Leading the charge on
record-breaking performances was Matt Anderson of Manchester who
broke a 70-year old school record in the 1600m run with a time of
4:20.33. His time also eclipsed the meet record set by Tom Cary of
Rockville in 1988. Anderson was a triple winner when he added the 800m
title as well as running a leg on the winning 4x400m relay team.
Teammate Tyrone Kelly won the 100m and 200m to help Manchester to
the Large School team title. Manchester also was victorious in the
4x100m relay and the 4x800m relay of
Josh Miller, Brian Mason,
Ryan Miller, and Matt Whalen set a
meet record of 8:05. David Metzger of Ellington won
the 3200m run with a record time of 9:43.71 which helped his team to the
Small School title. The other boys record of the day was set by Chris
Watson of East Catholic in the Long Jump with a leap of 21'-10".
On the girl's side of the ledger, Sonia Hill of Suffield recorded
her third Journal Inquirer title in the 100m dash and then cam back to
win the 200m dash as well. Jessica Warren of South Windsor set a
new meet record in the Pole Vault in clearing 9'-0". South Windsor won
the Large School team title. Jamie Killis of RHAM dominated the
field events in winning the Shot Put, Discus and Javelin throws.
Double-winner Allison Croft of Ellington helped lead her school
to the Small School team title with victories in the 1600m and 3200m
runs.
No meet results available at post time.

flights of national caliber athletes this year where five of the runners
broke 9:00 minutes and while three more broke 9:16. In winning the
2-Mile, Chris Barnicle's 8:50.82 also broke the All-Time New
England HS Record of 8:53.7 set by the great Alberto Salazar in 1976.
Ahmed Haji of Conard-West Hartford ran 8:58.69 to set a new
Connecticut State 2-mile record formally held by Dan Wilson.

Highlight 33rd Hartford Public High School Outdoor Invite...
(May 9, 2004) There were a
record number of athletes competing at the 33rd
Annual Hartford Public High School Invitational Outdoor Track and
Field Meet, held on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at Trinity College's track and field facility
in Hartford Connecticut. Most of the events were fiercely competitive
but at the same time there was overwhelming evidence of mutual respect
between the competitors. In the Men's' 2-mile race, an elite group of
runners had decided to make the race special; the result speaks for
itself --- five runners under 9:00 minutes. On the short side of the
track meet, the Women's' 100m dash highlighted a rivalry between two of
the top Connecticut sprinters. The visual finish was misleading because
the winner was actually declared by the photo-finish system. More to
come....including Meet Champions Photo Gallery and Meet Photos

National Champion
Tyvon Branch Ready for 33rd Hartford Public High School Outdoor
Invite... |
 |
(Apr 29,
2004) Perhaps one of the nation's premiere sprinter in the nation is
Tyvon Branch from Cicero North Syracuse High School. Branch,
6-1 and 190 pounds earned All-American status as a 60 meter champion
(out leaning last years defending champion, Derrick Jones) and
placing an impressive 3rd in the 200 (behind the current National
record holder Xavier Carter) at the 2004 National Scholastic Indoor
Track Championship. |
Tyvon is
setting high expectations for the 2004 outdoor track. He wants to
return to States and prevail in the 100 and 200 meter dash (10.3 and
20.8 respectfully). However, Branch's passion is to compete along
side the X-MAN, Xavier Carter at Nationals. "I didn't get to race
Xavier head to head in the 200 at Nationals (Indoor) but wait until
June."
Branch will journey north to the University of Connecticut on a full
scholarship to play football. He hopes to start as a freshman and
some day be drafted by an NFL team, even if it is the Chargers.
