2004 Penn Relays Selected Results...
(Apr 24, 2004) Several
relay teams and individuals from Connecticut participated in the 110th
running of the Penn Relay Carnival at Franklin Field and hosted by the
University of Pennsylvania. Relay teams from Bloomfield, Hillhouse,
Ridgefield and New Canaan among others competed on Thursday and
Friday in one of the largest outdoor events of the season. Individual
performances included Ahmed Haji of Conard, who placed fifth in
the 3000m with a time of 8:34.66 as well as Hillhouse thrower
Dominque Burell in the Shot Put (39-11.25) and Brandy Bishop of
Old Saybrook in the Javelin.

Shantea Calhoun
wins the 200m |

2004) In the first major test of the 2004 Outdoor season, the top
competitors from the indoor season showed their early season form at
the Trinity College-E.T. Brainerd Interscholastic Invite held at
Trinity College on Saturday. The sunny skies, with temperatures
hovering in the 70s, benefited sprinter and distance runners alike
as Shantea Calhoun of Wilbur Cross and Ahmed Haji of
Conard West Hartford provided sparkling performances. Shantea
Calhoun won the 100m in a photo-finish with Monique Hodges of
Wethersfield in 12.22, ran legs on the winning 4x100m and 4x400m
relays as well as leading the field in the 200m in 24.64. On the
boys side of the ledger, Ahmed Haji used a final 200m kick in
the 1600m to outpace Friday's 5000m winner Phil Mitchell of
Glastonbury to win in 4:20.21. Haji then came back to record his
first sub 2-minute 800m where he overtook Steve Blanchard of
Ledyard in the final 200m to win in 1:59.48. In other distance
events, Dave Holliday of Ledyard won easily in the 3000m
Steeplechase in 10:09.22 while Dave Krause of Amity led the
field in the 3200m in 9:47.18. In the Girls 1600m, Amie
Schumacher of Holy Cross led the field to the wire in a time of
5:14.75. In the Boys sprints, Andrew Arons of Hall-West
Hartford won the 200m and placed second in the 100m to Kyle
Watkins of Hillhouse. Jon Stakey of Ledyard won the 400m
as well as helped his team to a win in the 4x400m relay. In the
boy's field events, Jesse Breault of Amity was a
double-winner as he won the Shot Put and the Javelin Throw.

College-E.T. Brainerd Interscholastic Invite continues with its second
day of competition today at Trinity College in Hartford with a full
slate of events. While results from Friday's competition are

Weekly Results, Rockville Relays
and Bloomfield Invite Kickoff Outdoor 2004 Results...

starts a fifth season of weekly coverage of high school outdoor track
and field in Connecticut. The usual Weekly coverage of conference meets
is available as well as individual coverage of weekend invitational
meets.

Rockville Relays...
As they were setting up the field for the meet, the Rockville coaching
staff actually took a picture of the sunrise because 2004 is the first
year of this meet with no rain in sight! Twenty-two boys teams and
twenty girls teams competed this year. The off-track two-mile
relay was the first event of the meet and proved to be very popular.
Approximately 830 athletes took part in this year's meet.
Highlights from the Boys events:
- Dan Sheldan, junior from Woodstock
Academy, new overall meet record in the javelin...171' 6"
- Tyler Parker, Newington, new record
in the sophomore javelin...149 '6".
- Tyrone Kelly, Manchester, new record
in the sophomore 100...:11.14
- Kenny Jones, Ledyard, new record in
the junior long jump...20' 1.5"
- Notable performance from the Harris
twins from Wethersfield in the junior 100 where they tied for first in
:11.04
- In the inaugural off-track two-mile
relay, Manchester took the first two places in 10:13 (Miller,
Anderson), and 10:28 (Mason, Pilgrim) respectively.
Highlights from the Girls events:
- Hodges, Wethersfield, new record in
the junior 100...:11.78
- In the inaugural off-track two-mile
relay, LeBuffe and Danaher from Hall took first in 12:01.
State Outdoor Track
and Field Records Updated...
(Mar 28, 2004) The
Connecticut State Outdoor Track and Field Records have been updated with
the results from last season's performances. Please email additions or
corrections us with the Subject: CIAC Outdoor Corrections. Make
sure to include all the necessary information including where the
results can be verified.
33rd Hartford Public
High School Outdoor Invite...
(Mar 28, 2004) The 33rd Annual Hartford Public High School Invitational Outdoor Track and
Field Meet will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2004 commencing at 9:30
am at
Trinity College's track and field facility. Teams and athletes from
fourteen states are invited to participate:
Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont,
Maryland, Pennsylvania. New Hampshire, Maine, Virginia, Kentucky, Washington DC
and Delaware. We hope that your team or some of its members will be able to compete.
All of the Entry procedures, fees, rules
and minimum standards are available at the
2004 HPHS Outdoor website.
Online meet entry will be available shortly.
New This Year: Please note that all registration will take place
online and there will be no event entry or event changes (except
scratches) on the day of the meet. Due to the sanction demands of the
NFHS, all school and event registration must be completed by
midnight, Monday April 26, 2004.
The Trinity College 400m track is urethane,
including the runways for the long jump, triple jump and pole vault. It is
recommended that 1/4-inch spikes be used. Spikes in excess of 1/4-inch will not
be allowed on the running track and/or runways. The shot put and discus
competition areas are depressed concrete circles.
Only individual champions will be declared, no team scores. Large Heisman-type
trophies will be awarded to the meet's top performers in track and field. Loving
cups will presented to the meet's MVPs. Watches
will be presented to the winners in each event and Olympic style medallions will be
presented to the next five place winners. (click

considered by many to be one of the largest and most outstanding on the East
Coast. It has consistently produced athletes who have gone on to compete and
gain recognition in the Golden West and National Interscholastic track meets
held annually for outstanding high school track stars throughout the United
States.
The meet is sanctioned by the CIAC, PSAL and the National Federation of High
Schools for Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey.
Vermont, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire. Maine, Virginia, Kentucky,
Washington DC and Delaware. This meet is sponsored Hartford Public High School
with assistance of corporate sponsors.

2004) Penn Relays high school entries must be received in the Penn
Relays office by Tuesday, March 30, at 4:00 p.m. Entries RECEIVED
after the deadline will not be accepted.
High School coaches wishing to update marks in individual events may
do so to a Secondary Schools Committee member by Sunday, April 4, at
6:00 p.m. Updates for the 4x800 and distance medley may be submitted
to a Committee member by |

(Mar 24, 2004) With the
start of the Connecticut 2004 Outdoor Track and Field season this week,
we will be providing previews of some of the major meets that are
already on the 2004 Outdoor Track & Field Schedule.
Meet Directors are encouraged to send
us their own meet preview story for publication over the next few weeks.
