Tamara
Highsmith of East Haven |
(June 20, 2003) Tamara
Highsmith of East Haven, the Class L 100m Hurdle and Triple Jump

to capture her first CIAC State Heptathlon Championship. Poor weather
had forced the CIAC sponsored event to conclude on Thursday at Veterans'
Stadium in New Britain. Highsmith maintained her lead over Lussier with
solid performances in the final three events for a final score of 4002
points to 3827 for Lussier. Highsmith showed her versatility in winning two (100m hurdles and 200m)
of the four events contested on Tuesday. |

overall victory with a 2:33 effort in the 800m that was 100 points
more than Lussier's
effort of 2:42 in the final event. The remaining medallists include
Keisha Regular, Staples (3673), Jen Chowaniec, Lewis Mills

| Berg Overtakes
Foster to Win CIAC State
Decathlon Championship Title... |
|

Sean Berg
of Fitch
High School |
(June 20, 2003) Sean Berg of Fitch
High School used his superior talents in the final events to outpace
runner-up Vladimir
Foster of Bunnell High School to earn his first CIAC Men's Decathlon Championship.
Berg took advantage of his prowess in the 110m Hurdles, both the Discus
and Javelin throws and the Pole Vault to score overwhelming points to
overtake first-day leader Foster. Berg finished with 6,538 points to
Foster's second place total of 6200 points. Berg has improved every year
he has competed in the grueling ten-event contest; he was the 2002
runner-up behind state champ Adam Polite with 5,971 points and a 5,389
point finish in 2001. |
|
The two-day affair
concluded on Thursday at Veterans' Stadium in New Britain after
weather made competition unsafe on Wednesday. First-day leader
Foster won the 100m and the High Jump to earn a total of 3384 points
to take the early lead over Berg
(3264 pts) and James Goetter of Lewis Mills with 3099 points. But while
Berg cleared 12'11.5" in the Pole Vault, Foster could only manage a 9"5"
height, a difference of 272 points. Berg followed the Vault with a toss
of 152-11" in the Javelin to further add to his total over Foster. Berg
finished with a sub-5minute 4:55 in the 1500m to seal his championship
with Foster finishing 15 seconds behind.
The remaining 2003 CIAC Decathlon medallists include Jacob Eanniello, Torrington,
