A Record Season for State Athletes...
(Mar 7, 2006) The assault
on the State Indoor Track and Field records this season is almost over
as some of the state's top indoor track and field athletes still have
time to gain entry into the record-books at one of the two national
meets; the Nike Indoor Nationals or the National Scholastic Indoor
Championships. Thus far, there have been six girls State Records and
four boys State Records set this season.
The assault on the record books this
season started with Stacey-Ann Smith of Bloomfield as she set
a new state record in the 55m dash of 7.04 seconds at the New Haven
Invite on Dec. 17, 2005. The former record of 7.08 was set in 1996 by Shayla
Wallace of Northwest Catholic. Smith then lowered the 55m record to 7.00
at the Stanner Games in New York on Jan. 14, 2006. Smith also joined
Wallace in the record-book in the 300m dash as Smith equaled the state
record of 39.17 at the Yale Classic on Jan. 20, 2006.
In the distance events, the girls team
from Ridgefield always seem to be at the top of the leader board
and things were no different this season as they garnered two state
records. The first record effort from Ridgefield came in the Distance
Medley Relay where the team of senior Leah Rosenfeld, senior
Emily Heaslip, senior Katie Murdoch and sophomore Heather
Stephens ran 12:16.36 at the Marine
Corps Holiday Classic on Dec. 27, 2005 at the New Balance Track
and Field Center at the Armory in New York. The former DMR record of
12:22.26 was set in the 2005 season at the Yale Invite by Conard. Splits
on route to the new record included
Rosenfeld (3:35.42-1200m), Heaslip (60.32-400m), Murdoch (2:23.09-800m)
and Stephens (5:17.53-1600m). Ridgefield then traveled on Jan. 21,
2006 to the New Balance Games at The Armory in New York to set a new
record of 9:18.60 in the 4x800m Relay. The former record of 9:20.83 by
New Canaan was set in 1998. The Ridgefield relay team included: Leah
Rosenfeld (2:15.82), Elly
Teitsworth (2:25.40), Katie Murdoch (2:19.33), Emily Heaslip (2:18.58).
Also at the top of the results list each
meet was senior Kerri Lyons of Wilton in the 800m and 1000m
events. At the 24th Yale Interscholastic Track Classic on Saturday, Jan.
21, 2006, Lyons established a new Girls State Record of 2:14.15 in the
800m run. The previous record of 2:16.29 for the 800m run was held by
Maxine Clark of Weaver and was set in 1993.
On the boys side of the ledger, Corey
Mosley of Amity Regional reset two of the Boys' State Records in
middle-distance events; the 600m and 1000m runs. At the 37th Dartmouth
Relays held on Jan. 7, 2005 Mosley entered the Indoor State Record books
when he ran the 600m run in 1:21.20. The former hand-time record
of 1:21.1 by Osborne Shaw of Bridgeport Central was set in 1993. At the
recent New England Interscholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships
held on Mar, 3, 2006, Mosley won the 1000m run in 2:28.06 to
narrowly eclipse the long-standing 1987 State Record of 2:28.07 set by
Mike Remigino of NW Catholic. In the longer 3200m run,
senior Jay Koloseus of Guilford established a new State and Open
Meet record of 9:11.34 at the CIAC State Open Meet on Feb. 18, 2006 at
the New Haven Track and Field Center. The former 3200m State Record of
9:12.79 was held by Peter Rea of Farmington since 1987.
In the Boys Field events, there was no
larger story than that of the assault on the Pole Vault record by senior
Jordan Thull of East Lyme. Thull started his quest in a few
developmental meets and then officially broke the 30-year old state
record set by Ken Appel of Amity in 1975 of 15 feet and a half inch when
he cleared 15 feet and 2 inches at the 24th Brown Interscholastic Relays
on Dec 28, 2005 at Brown University in Providence RI. Thull continued to
push the state indoor pole vault record higher as he cleared 15'6" at
the 63rd Hartford Public Indoor Invitational held at
Wesleyan University in Middletown CT on Jan. 7, 2006. Thull again
improved on his state record by clearing 15'7" at the CIAC Class L
Championship Meet on Feb. 9, 2006 at the New Haven Track and Field
Center.
The Girls Field events also saw a
repeated update in the Shot Put by senior Tynisha McMillan of
Stamford. Her initial entry into the state record book came from her
winning heave of 46 feet and 8 inches at the 37th Dartmouth Relays held
on Jan. 7, 2005 in Hanover NH. The former record of 44'3" was held by
Allison Bradshaw of Pomperaug that was set at the Yale Interscholastic
Meet on Jan. 19, 2002. McMillan then set the current State and Open Meet
record in the Shot Put with a throw of 46'-11.75" at the CIAC State Open
Meet on Feb. 18, 2006 at the New Haven Track and Field Center.
