National
Scholastic Indoor Championships...
Career High School will send Natasha Harvey and Michelle Johnson to the
Armory. Natasha will be participating in the long jump, 60 hurdles and
the 200m dash. Michelle will be competing in the 200m dash as well.
The East Hartford High School Girls 4x800m Relay team continues to
improve as seen at the New England meet last week. The team of Allie Lemire, Joy Osahon, Karina Johnson, Kathryn Vollinger, Tejal Patel, and
Nicole Coiteux will look to better their latest school record of 9:45.05
set at the New England Championships. So far the team has met each of
their pre-season goals through hard work and sacrifice throughout the
season.
The East Lyme High School Boys' team has assembled a talented crew of
long distance runners and have entered them in the 4x1mile relay. The
team consists of seniors: Matt Warren, John Babcock, and Alex Parulis
and sophomore Olin Paige. East Lyme has also a entered a Distance
Medley Relay team (1200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m) of the three seniors and
junior Tim Allen, who will run the 400m leg.
The Hamden High School Boys team will be represented by Tristan Medley
in the Triple Jump. His best mark this year is 45'2". Their 1600m Sprint
Medley Relay team of Lyndon Pitter, Jabari Lykes, Rodney Grant and Frank
Brady has entered the meet with a seed time of 3:39.
The goal for the Hillhouse (New Haven) Girls 4x200m relay team is clear
-- to make the finals and break the state record of 1:43.46 set by their team
in 1993. At last week's Eastern States meet at the Armory, this year's team
ran 1:44.38 for sixth place. It was the first time this season that they
were able to run their best squad. Scheduled to compete at the Armory in
the 4x200m are Shaniqua Burguess (26.1) Tiffany Bromfield (25.89) Ann
Marie Clarke (25.24) and Kelly Libert (26.2) - a pair of freshman and
juniors. Tiffany is also competing in the Pentathlon and Kelly in the
400m dash.
State Open Champions Hyde Leadership of New Haven take their talented
sprint quartet of James Nixon, Willie Harriot, Eddie Daniels and Donald
Morris to the Armory. The foursome will take their state leading 1:30.54
seed time to the fast banked Armory track to see if the State Record of
1:30.45 can be broken. Hyde also has entered Nixon (6.43) and Harriot
(6.50) in the 60 meter dash. Nixon will also compete in the the 200m
race where he already has run a 22.50. Daniels and Morris are joined by
Chris Blackwood and Troy Frost in the 4x400m relay competition. Harriott will attend Penn State next fall on a football scholarship
and
has a personal record of 6.50 in the 55m dash. Nixon has personal
records of 6.43 in the 55m, 34.87 in the 300m (flat track), and 22.5 in
the 200m -- all school records. Daniels nickname is "Ironman" and
has been a strong performer all season, running under 50 seconds for
a leg on the 4x400m relay. Morris, in his first year of indoor track, is
also an accomplished dancer and choreographer. Frost was a member
of the 2004 Class S State Outdoor Championship 4x400m relay team and has
run 52.5 split in the relay. Blackwood, another integral part of
the 4x400m relay, has run a 51.5 relay leg and is also a star baseball
player continuing thru spring season for the opportunity to compete in
the national championships.
The Manchester High School Boys 4x800m relay team of Matt Whalen, Brian Wirtalla, Josh Miller, and Scott Perkins take their season best time
8:09.67 to the Armory. Accompanying the relay team are John Redding, who
will compete in the long jump, and Marcus Lucas, competing in the Shot
Put.
Naugatuck High School's Joe Ardito will compete in the Long Jump at the
Armory, he finished in sixth place at the New England Track and Field
competition last weekend. His best effort of the competition was 20-11.5,
less than his best season effort of 22-01, which he jumped at the CiAC
Class 'L' Championship Meet. This is Joe's first season competing in track and field and as a
junior he appears to be making up for lost time. In his brief track and
field career Joe has broken the Naugatuck Valley League records in the
Long Jump and the 300M and has also rewritten the Naugatuck High School
records in the 55M, 300M and the Long Jump several times.
The Ridgefield High School Girls Team sends a number of athletes to the Armory this
weekend. Competing this weekend in a novel event, the Shuttle Hurdles
Relay, are Caroline Davis, Alyssa Treat, Emily Navarro, and Caitlin Arturi. The quartet of Elly Teitsworth, Katie Murdoch, Emily Heaslip,
and Leah Rosenfeld will compete in the infrequently contested Distance
Medley Relay. Liz Navarro will join Rosenfeld, Teitsworth, Heaslip to
compete in the more traditional 4x800m relay. In the individual
events, Heaslip Murdoch will compete in the 400m while Open Champion
Heather Stephens will compete in the 2-Mile. Stephens' time in the in
the 2mile is one of the top ten in the nation this season.
The Shelton High School Boys' 4x800m relay team will be also be
competing on Sunday at the Armory. The team consists of identical twins
Chris and Phil Padilla, Tom Hope and Ken McDonnell. The relay team won
the LL meet and set a meet record of 8:12.57. They finished fourth at
the State Open meet with a school record 8:10.96. At the New England
Championships the team came back strong with a fifth place finish time
of 8:11.45. The Padilla brothers and Hope, along with 400m runner, Ryan
Rasmussen, are entered in the Distance Medley Relay as well.
Although Connecticut doesn't feature the Triple Jump during the CIAC
Indoor season anymore, Southington High School's Boys team is sending Clinton DePaolo to compete in the Triple Jump at the Armory. A multi-event
athlete with bests of 21'1" in the long jump and 8.04 in the 55m
hurdles, DePaulo's seed distance of 13.8m in the Triple Jump is a school
record.
Nike Indoor Nationals...
The Nike Indoor Nationals, held annually since 1999 are scheduled for
March 12-13, 2005 and are organized by the National Scholastic Sports
Foundation, Inc. The event, one of three national championships
sponsored by Nike, is currently staged at Prince George's Sports Complex
outside Washington, D.C. The facility has a fast, 200-meter track, where
numerous records have been set. The Bill Bowerman Award, created by
Nike, is presented to the coaches of the girls' and boy's mile winners.
The top six finishers in each event are named to the American Track and
Field Magazine All-American team as well as named to the 2005 Nike
Indoor Championships All America Team and receive All America
certificates. Coinciding with the meet is the Sprint Summit on Friday,
March 11, 7:30-10pm. All athletes are admitted free of charge. This
year's summit features 2004 Olympic Gold Medallists Joanna Hayes
(Hurdles), Justin Gatlin (100m) and Dwight Phillips (Long Jump). More
information is available at their website:
Nike Indoor Nationals...
Although the quantity
of the delegation from Connecticut to the Nike meet is not large, the
quality is top rated and led by State Open and New England champion
Myles Bradley of Norwich Free Academy.
As of this week, Bradley is still the nation's leader in the 55m
Hurdles at 7.26 and is also ranked second in the nation in the Long Jump
at 24'2.25".
Katherine D'Auria of NFA is
also attending the Nike meet to compete in the 800m run. She is the New
England, State Open, Class LL, and ECC champion in the 600m, her best
time of 1:34.83 ranks her as eighth nationally.
Conard High School of West Hartford will also be competing at the Nike
Indoor Nationals when they send their talented squad of senior Heather
Bemis and a sophomore trio of Caitlin Cannon, Emma Perron and Molly
Fresher to run in the 4x800m and Distance Medley relays. Their DMR State
record time of 12:22.26, set at the Yale Invite earlier this season,
puts them in the top twelve in an elite group in the DyeStat national
rankings. Their 9:40 clocking in the 4x800m set earlier this year puts
them in the DyeStat top fifty. Bemis (800m) and Perron (2mile) are
also entered in individual events but will most likely only run in the
relays.
Ridgefield High
School is also making the longer trip to the Nike Indoor Nationals and
has entered their Boys 4x800m and Distance Medley relays and an
individual in the 800m run. The State Open Champion 4x800 team includes Kellen Quigley (junior), Marty Gennusa (senior), Patrick Moffat (senior)
and Josh Kearns (junior). Their State Open Championship time of 8:06.35
has them currently ranked in the top 35 in Dyestate Elite National
Rankings. Competing in the DMR will be Patrick Moffat (1200), TJ Brennan
(400), Marty Gennusa (800), Josh Kearns (1600). The Ridgefield DMR is
currently ranked in the top 30 in the Dyestat Elite National Ranking.
The Ridgefield DMR has only competed once at the Yale Invitational where
they ran 10:41.68. Competing in the individual 800m will be junior TJ
Brennan.
