Dynasties Defined -
Staples Boys and Hillhouse Girls Win L Titles ...
(Feb 12, 2005) Dynasty is
defined as a succession of rulers from the same family or a group that
maintains power for several generations. In CIAC Indoor Track and Field
over the past six years dynasty can be defined as the Staples Boys and Hillhouse Girls teams. From 2000 to 2003, Staples won the Class M titles
before moving up to Class L last year and winning the team trophy. They
have won again this year by with a dominant performance in scoring 90
points to runner-up Fitch with 59 and East Lyme with 44 points. The
Hillhouse Girls team just moved to the L class this year after five
Class M titles and the results are the same with a Class L title.
Hillhouse out scored runner-up Eat Lyme 54 to 51 followed by Ridgefield
with 48 points and Middletown with 42 points.
The Staples Boys team, scoring in eleven of the fifteen events,
were led by a record-setting performance by Remi Ray in the 600m
with a time of 1:21.68. The old record by run by Evan Shai of Hall in
1:24.47 was also bettered by Rob Stewart of Staples and Ken
Yearwood of Fitch. The Staples 4x400m team of Ray,
Stewart, Jason Harahan and Will Caffery broke the ten
year old record in winning in 3:29.12. Staples also received a first
place effort from Alex Karam in the Shot Put. Ray also placed
second in the 300m dash and teammate Bryan Wrapp was second in
the 55m dash. In one of the more thrilling performances of the meet,
senior Justin Harris of Wethersfield overcame a 20 meter deficit
in the last leg to win the 4x200m at the tape by four hundredths of a
second over the second place Staples team. Another outstanding
performance was run by senior Jay Koloseus of Guilford in winning
both the 1000m and 3200m races.

The Hillhouse Girls team captured their first Class title in
typical fashion by scoring in just seven events including three first
and two second places. Hillhouse used first places from Kelly Libert
in the 600m and the 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams. Libert was second in
the 300m as was Tiffany Bromfield in the 55m Hurdles. Libert and
Bromfield also teamed with Tamika Brock and Asia Taylor to
win the 4x400m relay. Four meet records were established including
Garynn Jackson of East Lyme who threw 39'0" in the Shot Put and
Daniella Point of Torrington when she cleared 10'2" in the Pole
Vault. In two of the three races where competitors ran away from the
pack, freshman Heather Stephens of Ridgefield set a new record in
11:07.59 in the 3200m run. In the second run-away record performance,
the Ridgefield and Conard 4x800m relay teams dueled each other
with Ridgefield winning in 9:38.30 to Conard's 9:40.66. Both were under
the old record of 9:42.66 set by Ridgefield in 2003. In the last
run-away event, Conard's Heather Bemis ran to quick 30meter lead
in the 1000m run and cruised to victory in 3:06.50. Nora Miller of
Middletown was impressive in recording two wins in the 55m Hurdles
and Long Jump and a third in the 55m dash behind winner Monique
Hodges of Wethersfield.

Sprinters Power AI
Prince Tech Boys and Career Girls to Class S Titles ...
(Feb 12, 2005) Both the
AI Prince Tech Boys team and the Career High School Girls team
used their sprinters and jumpers to power the way to victories in
the Class S meet on Saturday. For Career, it was their second
consecutive title but AI Prince Tech hadn't won a class title since back
to back titles in 1992 and 1993. Career 49 points was enough to win over
Old Saybrook and East Catholic with 40 points and Lyman Memorial with 36
points. AI Prince Tech dominated the team scoring with 92 points
followed by SWC champion Weston with 57.50 and Hyde Leadership with 57
points.
Similar to last year's title win, the Career Girls team consisted
of five athletes, led by senior Natasha Harvey who set records in
the each event she competed. Harvey set a new 55m Hurdle record in 8.22
and then leaped 19'0.5" to set a new Long Jump record. She then teamed
with Michelle Thompson, Siarra Johnson, and Lauren Williams
in the 4x200m Relay to establish a new record in 1:46.95. The only other
points for Career came from Thompson in the 55m dash(2nd), the 300m
dash(2nd) and Nakia Robinson in the High Jump(5th). The other
meet record was set by Kelly Sorrell of Lyman Memorial in the
3200m (11:31.19) after she had won the 1600m earlier in the meet.
Another outstanding performance was turned in by Sharelle Green of
New London as she completed a sweep in the 55m and 300m dashes.

AI Prince Tech of Hartford victory in the Class S Boys meet was
powered by victories in five events led by record-setting performances
from Careca Moore in the 600m (1:24.40) and the Sprint Medley
Relay in 3:44.00. Prince Tech also used a 1-2 finish in the 55m Hurdles
from Jayme Ross and John Wilson and a 1-3-4 effort in the
High Jump from Wilson, Ross and Sean Arango. Chad Higley
contributed with a second place in the 300m and then teamed with Arango,
Moore and Damion Noble to win the 4x400m Relay. Two other records
were set in relay events as the Hyde 4x200m relay squad lowered
the record to 1:32.66 and the Old Saybrook 4x800 team ran to a
record victory in 8:18.85. James Nixon of Hyde was a double
winner in the 55m and 300m dashes as was Tradelle Ward of Griswold
in the 1600m and 3200m runs.

Amity-Woodbridge
Doubles in Class LL ...
(Feb 12, 2005) In it's
second year, the Class LL Meet saw history repeat itself as a single
school, Amity High School of Woodbridge, won the Boys and Girls
team titles; last year Danbury had won both meets. Both meets were close
as the Amity Boys team scored 70 points to defeat runner-up Hamden
(66pts), Danbury (52) and Norwich(52). The Girls team title was decided
by less than 3 points as Amity scored 73.50 points to 71 for the
Glastonbury and Danbury teams.
Similar to last week's SCC Championship victory, the Amity Girls team
used a balanced effort to claim first place in scoring in nine of
the fifteen events as they were led by a first place finish from
Celina Keniry in the High Jump and victories in the 4x800m and
Sprint Medley relays. Valuable points were scored by Sonia Haerizadeh
as she placed second in both the 1600m and 3200m runs. Leslie Boppert
also grabbed a second place in the 600m run. Several meet records were
bettered as Kristin Mitchell of Glastonbury won the 1600m in
5:15.70 (she also won the the 3200m run), Katherine D'Auria of
Norwich won the 600m in 1:37.97, Katernia Zavgorodniy of
Hall-West Hartford won the 55m Hurdles in 8.92, Lauranne Kline of
Danbury Long Jumped to a first with a leap of 17'1.5", Tynisha
McMillan of Stamford threw 40'6.50" for a new Shot Put record and
Amity's 1600m Sprint Medley set a new mark in 4:24.83.

The Amity Boys team also used a balanced attack to win the Class
LL meet in placing in ten of the fifteen events which included only one
victory from Jason Ellis in the 55m dash in a record time of
6.54. His teammates, Nathan Huvelle and Ryan Ullrich,
finished in the three-four spots in the dash. Amity also placed in all
four relays as well as getting a 3-4 finish from Chris Walsh and
William Sudhoff in the 3200m run. Alex Greenhouse also
placed third in the 55m Hurdles for Amity. The Boy's Class LL Meet
record book has new entries as nine event records were broken. The first
record was from Shelton's 4x800m Relay team which ran 8:12.57 and
was followed by a double effort from Myles Bradley of Norwich in
the 55m Hurdles (7.46) and Long Jump (23'9"). Anthony Roberson of
Hamden set a new mark in the High Jump with a leap of 6'8" while
Marcus Lucas of Manchester threw to a new record in the Shot Put
(50'1.5"). Lyndon Pitter of Hamden sprinted to a new record in
the 300m dash (35.46). Senior Phil Mitchell of Glastonbury ran to
a new 1600m record in 4:28.38 and then later won the 3200m run as well.
The only relay record was set by the Danbury 4x200m team with a
time of 1:33.34.

Weaver Dominates
Girls Class M -- Darien Boys Win Boys Title...
(Feb 11, 2005) The
Weaver Girls team showed some of their talent at the CCC
Championship last weekend but the talent overflowed on Thursday at the
CIAC Class M Girls Championship at Hillhouse High School. Weaver
scored 85 points to win by almost twice as much over second place Darien
with 45 points. Weaver took seven first places, led by Sashauna
Stewart in the 55m and 55m Hurdles, Renee Thompson in the
300m, and Sherice Hewitt in the 600m. The other first place
finishes came in record-breaking fashion in the 4x200m (1:48.15), the
4x400m 4:05.18, and the 1600m Sprint relay (4:20.62). The old record of
4:009.27 in the 4x400m was originally set by New Canaan in 1998. Another
meet record was set by Dara Samuel of Brookfield in the Pole
Vault with a height of 10'-3". Kerri Lyons of Wilton was a double
winner in the 1000m and 1600m runs.

Competition Ready
for 2nd CIAC Class
LL Meet...
(Feb 10, 2005) The second
Class LL Meet is scheduled for Friday February 11, 4:00pm at the New
Haven Track & Field Center at Hillhouse High School. The inaugural meet
last year provided a unique opportunity for the winners in each event in
that they established the meet records. Danbury High School
returns to defend both their Boys and Girls team titles against Amity,
Hamden, Manchester and Norwich in the Boys meet while Amity, Glastonbury
and Hall will also contend in the Girls Meet. Myles Bradley of
Norwich returns to defend his titles in the Long Jump and 55m
Hurdles. Tynisha McMillan of Stamford, the leading thrower in the
state this season, looks to claim the Shot Put record. Jason Ellis of
Amity and Lyndon Pitter of Hamden will probably face off
again in a repeat of the 55m dash finals of the SCC Championship last
week. Pitter will also be pressed hard by Steve Rochester of Danbury
in the 300m dash. Rochester also returns to defend his 600m title. In
the distance races, the Mitchells of Glastonbury are top seed in
several races; senior Phil in the 1000m, 1600m and 3200m while
sister Kristin is tops in the 1600m. In the Girls 3200m, Mitchell
faces top seed Anja Krieger-Redwood of Greenwich, who returns to
defend her 3200m title. In the Girls 1000m, Kelsey LeBuffe of Hall
will look to improve on the 3:03.17 record set by Liz Calle. The top
teams in the 4x800m relays are the Amity Girls and Manchester
Boys; who look to defend their Boys title.

Doubleheader - CIAC Class
S and L Meets on Saturday...
(Feb 10, 2005) The CIAC
Class Indoor Track and Field Meets wrap-up the competition on Saturday
with the Class S Meet scheduled for a 10:00am start while the first
races for the Class L meet are slated for 4:00pm.
In the Boys Class S Meet, defending champion Griswold is
relying on their junior distance duo of Tradelle Ward and
Chris Croff to sweep the 1-2 spots in the 1000, 1600m and 3200m runs
as well as obtain supporting points from their athletes in Shot Put and
High Jump. Close on their heels will be Hyde School, AI Prince Tech
and Bloomfield who all have outstanding athletes in the sprints,
jumps and relays. James Nixon and Willie Harriott are back
from last year to lead Hyde while Jayme Ross, Chad Higley, Damion
Noble and Careca Moore will try to power Prince Tech to the
team title. On the Girls side of the S meet, Career of New
Haven looks to win its sixth consecutive title. They will be led by
senior standout Natasha Harvey in the Long Jump and 55m Hurdles.
Look for a possible 1-2-3 Career finish in the hurdles since teammates
Latoya Williams and Siara Johnson have the next fastest
seed times. In the 55m dash, Michelle Johnson of Career will have
to deal with freshman sensation Stacey-Ann Smith of Bloomfield.
In the distance events, x-country standout Kelly Sorrell of Lyman
Memorial will try for two wins in the 1600m and 3200m.

In the matinee event, the
Class L Meet is highly competitive again as Staples seeks
to defend the Boys title against perennial ECC powers East Lyme and
Fitch while the Girls team title is up for grabs between East Lyme,
Fitch, Hillhouse and Ridgefield since Wilbur Cross moved to the LL meet.
The marquee event is the Pole Vault with both the leading vaulters in
the state competing; Jordan Thull of East Lyme (14') and
meet-state record holder Daniella Ponte of Torrington (10-6). In
other Girls field events, Nora Miller of Middletown shows her
talents in the Long Jump (and 55m Hurdles) and Sara Bennett of East
Lyme looks to match her 5-8 seed mark. The 55m dash features top
seed Monique Hodges of Wethersfield. In the distance events,
Conard has two of three top seeds with Heather Bemis in the
1000m and Emma Perron in the 1600m. Expect heated races in the
3200m between Perron and Ridgefield's Heather Stephens as well as
in the 4x800m relay since both teams have the top times in the state
this year. Top seeded performers to watch in the Boys Meet include
Sean Ware of Bristol Central in the Long Jump and High Jump and
Jay Koloseus of Guilford in the 1000m and 3200m. Close races are
slated for the 300m where the top five runners are within a half second
and the 1600m where the top three seeds, Matt Fuentes of Wilton,
Matt Warren of East Lyme and Josh Kearns of Ridgefield are
virtually equal. Heated relays are possible in the 4x800m between
Ridgefield and Staples and in the 4x200m between East Lyme
and Wethersfield.
