(Feb 21, 2004) An encore
performance by the Calhoun sisters of Wilbur Cross of last week's Class
meet accomplishments provided all the points their team needed to win the CIAC
State Open meet on Saturday, February 21 at the New Haven Track & Field Center.
Wilbur Cross scored 52 points to defeat Danbury with 25 points.
Shantea Calhoun sent a notice to the 55m dash field with a
record-breaking effort in the preliminaries and then came back in the
finals to win in the same time of 7.09 seconds to break Shayla Wallace's
mark from 1995. Sister Shanea Calhoun was right behind for 2nd in
7.10. The pair traded places later in the 300m with Shanea winning while
Shantea was second. The pair weren't finished as they teamed with
Evette Maysonet and Margarita Landelius to set a new meet
record in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:44.75. The first points of
the day for Wilbur Cross came in the 4x800 with a 3rd place finish
behind Amity and winner Ridgefield. In winning the race, the
Ridgefield team of Rebecca Chain, Elly Teitsworth, Leah Rosenfield and
Caitlin Helgesen established a new meet record of 9:34.94. Six more
meet records were set in the highly competitive meet including two in
the field events with a 19'9" Long Jump mark by Tahari James of
Branford and a 10'6" Pole Vault height by Daniela Ponte of
Torrington. The third relay mark to fall was in the 1600m Sprint
Medley Relay where the Weaver quartet of Renee Thompson, Rochelle
McCall, Melissa Black, and Sherice Hewitt ran 4:16.63. In the 600m,

(Feb 14, 2004) The

Desrosier of Killingly who set a meet record in the 55m dash (7.15),
won the 300m and anchored their second place 4x200m Relay team. Other
outstanding efforts were recorded by Jamie Kilis of RHAM in

A Record Day at Girls Class L, Staples'
Depth Keys Win...
(Feb 14, 2004) It would be an understatement
to say that Saturday was a highly competitive day as
athletes in eight of the fifteen events contested set new Girls Class L
records. The record-breaking at the Girls Class L Championship on
Saturday at the New Haven Track & Field Center started with Shantea
Calhoun (Wilbur Cross) in the 55m Dash Preliminary heats with a 7.16
effort that eclipsed the old 7.18 record. Next came junior Jilian
Gundling of Farmington in the 1000m who set a new record of 2:59.34.
Julia Rozier of Fitch kept the record pace with a 1:36.65 effort in the
600m. The records continued to drop in the 55m Dash Final as Shantea
Calhoun won in 7.10 and her sister Shanea finished second in
7.11. The competitive 1600m Sprint Medley Relay produced a record run of
4:18.35 from Farmington as the quartet of Rebecca Gundling, Becca Nickerson, Colleen Crowe
and Jilian Gundling. The torrid pace of records continued in the
300m as Shanea Calhoun and Shantea Calhoun ran 40.18 and
40.44 to eclipse the old mark of 40.99. Meanwhile, the field events
produced two records as Christine Matteis of Lyman Hall set a new
mark in the Shot Put with a toss of 38'9.5" and Daniella Ponte of
Torrington cleared 10'0" to establish a new Pole Vault record. The
last record of the day came when the Calhoun sisters teamed with Evette Maysonet
and Margarita Landelius to win the 4x200m Relay in 1:46.02.
Almost lost in the record excitement was the team effort from Wilbur
Cross who won the meet with 74 points with Fitch as the runner-up with
52 points. Betsy Boucher of Fitch was another double-winner in
the 1600m and the 3200m.

L Girls results...
In light of the high-scoring duel between Danbury and Staples in last
week's FCIAC meet that Danbury won, Staples was the heavy
favorite to win the Boys Class L meet on Saturday at the New Haven Track
& Field Center. Scoring in fourteen of the fifteen events, Staples
used their depth to convincingly win the title with 101 points over
runner-up Notre Dame of West Haven with 58 points. Staples depth was
evident as they placed twice in the 300m, 600m, 1000m, 3200m and Pole
Vault while scoring only
two first places; Andrew Lawrence in the Pole Vault and the 4x400m
Relay of Rob Stewart, Lawrence, Remi-Alain Ray and Orville
Bernard. Notre Dame did its best with Scott Giordano winning
the 55m Dash and the 300m race and Chris McDermott placed first
in the 1000m and was part of the winning 1600m Sprint Medley Relay team.
Ahmed Haji of Conard West Hartford used his 1600m victory as a
warm-up for a record setting 3200m race where he ran 9:16.84; the last
mile of it on his own. The other record performance came from the
Wethersfield 4x200m Relay team of Paul Cavalieri, Persis Oware, James Harris
and Justin Harris with a time of 1:32.04.

Fab 5 Lead Career to State Class S Girls
Title, Distance Crew Powers Griswold to Boys S Victory...
(Feb 14, 2004) As a coach,
its always your private goal to get the maximum effort from each of your
athletes at the same time since it provides a high degree of
satisfaction for your athletes and yourself. Coach Kareem Jackson of
Career High School of New Haven must be feeling pretty satisfied today
as his team of five athletes scored a narrow victory over Darien High
School, 62 to 61.33 points, for the Girls Class S Championship on Friday
at the New Haven Track & Field Center. The "Fab-5" were led by Nasha
Cadette with a record-breaking effort in the long jump (18'6.5")
followed by Natasha Harvey (2nd) and Shanta Cribbs (3rd).
The trio teamed with Lauren Williams to win the 4x200m Relay as
well as set a Class S record of 4:47.54. In adding to the team total
Harvey won the 55m Hurdles, freshman Michelle Johnson (2nd) and
Williams (4th) scored in the 55m dash while Cadette was third in the
300m. Two other Class S records were established by Dana Samuel of
Brookfield in the Pole Vault (9'6") and Haddam-Killingworth
team of Meghan Scanlon, Kimber Stannard , Katelyn Deimel, and
Danielle Funaro ran 4:20.66 in the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay.

The only word to best describe the Griswold Boys distance corps
is "dominant". For the second consecutive year, the Griswold Boys team

runner-up Hyde School. The Griswold distance crew of Gavin Coombs,
Tradelle Ward, Chris Croff, Jordan Kimble, Dave Bausch and Adam

1:33.16 in the 4x200m Relay and the Rocky Hill High School
