Troubled Times a Thing of the Past...Editor's
Note
(Feb 10, 2004) As a long
time fan of high school track and field in Connecticut, I was excited to
see that the CIAC Indoor Track and Field Committee had finally
implemented a new entry procedure for the class meets. The new procedure
now requires coaches to validate their athlete's performance mark by
entering the meet date and place. The intention of this new procedure is
to remove the liberties that some coaches had taken in the past by
entering athletes with inflated performance marks. In this day of the
Internet, with results of most meets available for widespread review,
the coach must now enter valid marks or face CIAC sanctions. In speaking
with the State Open Meet Director Bill Baron, he indicated that the new
entry procedure for the indoor meets should help him run more efficient,
higher quality meets. The plan for indoor is that the meet committee
will honor and review challenges to stated performance marks up to meet
time. Obviously, the earlier the challenge or the sooner that a coach
realizes that a mistake was made in the entry, the easier it is to
correct the entry. The plan for the outdoor meets in the spring differs
in that the class meet entry will be done a week ahead of time to allow
the outdoor committee to review all entries to check their validity.
Hopefully, with these new procedures in place, troubled times will be a
thing of the past.
