In the day’s first Varsity action, the Varsity I race, Norwich Free Academy flexed it muscle for the ECC as the Wildcats turned in a 4th place finish overall. Vos Hunter finished 5th (16:28) and Dan Cardin was 9th (16:40) with Zach Wesolek, Tom Miner and Patrick O’Rourke providing the rest of the top 5 scorers. While Hunter and Cardin were staying with the front leaders from Hamden and Cheshire, Wesolek, Miner and O’Rourke packed together towards the middle of the field and held on for the Wildcats.
The best time of the day for the boys came in the Varsity II Race as Chris Bendtsen toured the 3+ miles in 15:31. This race also gave the ECC its best individual performance as Bacon Academy’s Andrew Hill ran 5th overall in 16:23, 5 seconds ahead of Hunter’s performance for NFA. Bacon held on for a 4th place in the VII edition at Windham, while Ledyard finished 9th. Nate Hernandez’ 15th was the best individual effort for Ledyard.
In the 3rd Varsity contest of the day, Griswold served notice that it will not be giving the ECC title away uncontested. Coach Mike Flynn said last week that the team had gone to camp this summer and had put in some good solid base training since last June. He felt the team was in great physical shape and ready to compete successfully in the ever-tough ECC. His prediction has merit as Nick Emard won the VIII race in 16:56 and James Strmiska followed in 17:17 to lead the Wolverines to 2nd overall.
The Top Ten ECC performers yesterday were Hill, Hunter, Cardin, Chris Chapman (Fitch), Emard, Bacon’s James Wall, Hernandez, Strmiska, and Fitch’s Ryan Ludlam and Alex Olendorf. The Top Three Aggregate times belonged to NFA, Griswold and Bacon Academy.
