2004 Relay for Life
UPDATE
We have
selected this year's honorary co-chairs for the event: Tom Kane,
who is a kindergarten teacher at Wolcott School, a survivor and a
well-loved and respected member of the community, and Elisabeth
Strillacci, a survivor, a writer and former news
reporter who is married to West Hartford police chief Jim Strillacci.
The
Survivor Reception, open to anyone
who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, will be held at 6:30 p.m. To
ensure a t-shirt, survivors should register before the event.
The
Luminaria Ceremony, where candles
lit in honor of or in memory of those with cancer line the track, begins
around 9:30 and everyone is invited.
For
those who are just discovering the event, forming a team is not
necessary. We can add people to existing teams. In addition, while this
is a 24-hour event, it is not necessary to stay for the entire 24 hours.
Come for a few hours and enjoy this special camaraderie.
The
next Relay meeting is June 17 in
the Conard High School cafeteria at 7 p.m. Anyone with questions or who
needs forms is invited to attend.
Conard High School,
West Hartford
Hosts 2004 Relay for Life
Conard High
School of West Hartford is hosting the Relay for Life on Saturday, June 26 and Sunday,
June 27, 2004. This event will take place on the Conard track and
fields from 12 noon on Saturday until 12 noon on Sunday. Relay for Life
is a unique, challenging and fun way to raise money for the American
Cancer Society in the West Hartford community as well as raise awareness
of cancer and the work of the American Cancer Society. Conard High
School has agreed to help sponsor the event and the Conard Athletic
Leadership Council has agreed to make it a top priority for their
community service this year. We are also proud to announce that the Co-Chairs for this year’s event
are Conard High School parents Susan Myers and Larry Storm. This is the
second consecutive year that Conard has hosted this event along with
both Susan and Larry serving as chairpersons for the third time.
Last year, the
Relay for Life event raised over 60,000 dollars. We are extremely proud
of the entire Conard community that helped make this event so
successful. Several of our students, faculty and parents participated
and are looking forward to an even better event this June.
Some Facts about the Relay:
The event is held
on the track where teams of 8-15 people from schools, corporations,
hospitals, civic groups and families take turns in the relay. At least
one team member is on the track to walk, jog, or run at all times. Also
as part of the event, there is a special lap for cancer survivors only,
as well as a luminary ceremony after dark to honor those who have
survived, and remember those who have not. Team members help create a
community atmosphere by camping out, enjoying entertainment, food,
games, and camaraderie while the relay is taking place.
Our first important meeting is the
Kick Off Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at 7:30 PM in the Conard
Cafeteria. Snow date is Monday, Feb. 9, 2004. At this meeting a great
deal of information is given out regarding the relay and all are invited
to attend. Please consider getting involved in this worthwhile event.
