The 10th New Haven Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center at Hillhouse High School on Friday night featured good early season varsity level performances from many of the state's veteran athletes as well as from athletes from New York.
The Norwich Free Academy Boys and Hillhouse Girls teams took home first place finishes in the 4x800m Relay as NFA posted a 8:24.44 time for a comfortable win over runner-up NW Catholic in second place at 8:38.16. The Hillhouse Girls team edged runner-up Greenwich by a 10:05.00 to 10:06.87 margin for the victory.
In the 55m Dash finals, Harold Cooper of Hillhouse took first in 6.59 over runner-up Robert Martino of North Branford in 6.62. The Girls 55m Dash win was earned by Shatajah Wattley of Montville in a close 7.44 to 7.45 margin over runner-up Adrian Jones of Bloomfield.
The finals of the Girls' 55m Hurdles saw McKenzie Hollenbaugh of Glastonbury take first place in 8.58 with Ashley Wiggins of New Rochelle NY in second at 8.80. The finals of the Boys' 55m Hurdles was won by Brandon Johnson of Montville in 7.89 while Danny Lewis of Hillhouse placed second in 7.93.
The Girls' 800m Run featured a win by Kellie Davis of Hillhouse in 2:19.88 as she bested Medinah Nabadduka of Windsor in 2:20.42. The Boys' 800m Run saw Andrew Weiler of NFA cross the line in 2:00.19 with Kevin Stanko of Simsbury in second place at 2:01.06.
Tom Lupoli of Sheehan and Joe Crafa of Rocky Hill moved their cross country duel indoors as the two placed 1-2 with Lupoli winning in 4:29.57 and Crafa second in 4:30.48. Sarah Gillespie of NW Catholic showed quick early season form as she won the Girls' 1600m Run in 5:07.00 as Annmarie Tuxbury of NW Regional was second in 5:13.67.
Rayanna Relerford of Bloomfield sprinted to a win in the 200m Dash in 26.38 while Wattley of Montville placed second in 26.67. The Boys' 200m Dash event was captured by Daniel Jamieson of Windsor in 23.35 as Shamar Smith of Manchester placed second in 23.36.
In addition to the 200m, 400m and 800m events, the other non-state meet event contested was the Distance Medley Relay with legs of 1200, 400m, 800, and 1600m. The Immaculate Girls team placed first in 13:03.36 with NFA in second at 13:09.47. The Boys' race was won by the Pawling NY team in 11:17.03 as Manchester scored second place in 11:23.23.
The Boys' 400m Dash finish was unique in the age of photo finishing as both Aaeron Sykes of Sport Medical Sciences and Ryan Kelly of Greenwich were timed in a dead heat time fo 51.60. In another close finish, Rochelle Forbes of Sport Medical Science won in 1:00.72 over runner-up Catherine Voepel of Berlin in 1:00.90.
Annmarie Tuxbury of NW Regional returned with a victory in the Girls' 3200m Run in 11:20.69 as the top four runners finished under the 11:40 mark that included a second place by Reid Watson of Glastonbury in 11:25.56. The Boys' 3200m Run was won by Matt Klein of Hopkins in 9:50.20 over runner-up Chris Madaffari of Brien McMahon in 9:53.34.
The Greenwich Boys' 4x200m Relay team finished in 1:36.88 from the fourth heat to score the win over heat five winner Prospect Heights NY in 1:37.12. The New Rochelle NY Girls' 4x200m team took home the win in 1:50.86 over runner-up Career in 1:51.71.
The final track event of the night featured a win by the Glastonbury Girls' 4x400m team in 4:08.08 over runner-up Greenwich in 4:10.07. The Boys' 4x400m Relay was closely contested as the Fairfield Ludlowe Boys won in 3:42.25 over runner-up Amityville NY in 3:42.27 and third place Rocky Hill in 3:42.28.
In the field events, Cherraine Davis of Southington won the Girls' Shot Put with a toss of 41'2" to win comfortably over runner-up Carlisha Jenkins of Hillhouse with a throw of 36'5". Jacob Tomczak of Debry won the Boys' Shot Put with a throw of 46'7.75" as Izaiah Brooks of Bloomfield took second with a throw of 45'9.75".
Janae Wilson of Windsor leaped 16'11" for the win in the Girls' Long Jump as Natalie Bowens of Montville placed second with a leap of 16'5". Dan Santalla of NW Regional won the Boys' Long Jump with a leap of 21'4.5" to edge runner-up Kwencey Crittenden of Windsor at 21'0.5".
Tim Murphy of New Fairfield opened the season by vaulting 13'0" for the win while Andrew Aronne of Wethersfield placed second at 11'6". Jane Martinez captured the Girls' Pole Vault as she cleared 9'6" to edge runner-up Johari Privott-Yeiser of New Rochelle NY with the same height.
The Girls' High Jump was won by Corie Scharpf of Terryville as she cleared 5'0" in close competition with three others who also cleared the same height including runner-up Jasmine White of Classical Magnet. Nick Latty of Glastonbury soared over the 6'4" mark for the win while C.J. Raia of Darien cleared 5'10" for second place.
