Robbie Cozean can now lay claim as a national champion after his memorable victory on Friday night at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Meet. The Xavier junior overtook early leader Caleb Futter of Christian Academy of Indiana High School with a lap to go in the Boys Championship 5000m race. Cozean ran his last lap in a blazing time of 59.7 to finish in 14:26.18. He joins Alex Ostberg of Darien and Adam Vess of Xavier as the third Connecticut athlete to win a national championship in this event. His performance gave him the #1 time in the United States this season and the second fastest time in Connecticut history behind Ostberg’s state record of 14:16.61 and better than two-time Olympian Donn Cabral.
