After a bronze medal finish last year in the CIAC State Open Girls Hammer Throw Trinity Cardillo of Southington only needed one toss of the 4kg Hammer to secure the gold medal in competition yesterday at Manchester HS in Manchester CT. Her toss of 139’11” edged runner-up Leah Moore of Hillhouse with her mark of 137-04 while Samantha Cerra of Tolland placed third with a mark of 131-03. Fortunately for Cardillo that she only needed the one throw since she fouled on all successive attempts. Also earning a place in the top six finishers was Sydney Mello of Lewis Mills (125-07), Fiona Smith of Seymour (122-00) and Morgan Sartor of Innovation (117-11).
The CIAC State Open Girls 2k Steeplechase featured a first place by Sydney Dzenutis of Northwestern Regional in 7:22.55 that was a huge improvement over her fourth-place finish last year in 7:32.67. Earning a silver medal was Meredith Bloss of Guilford in 7:36.64 closely followed by bronze medalist Caroline Webb of Greenwich in 7:39.98. The remaining top six finishers included Alexandra Kenealy of Shelton (7:53.02), Kathryn Bonanno of Ellington (7:57.25) and Maegan Desmarais of Thomaston (8:02.49).
The first of two days in the CIAC State Open Girls' Heptathlon and Boys Decathlon competition were also conducted on Tuesday at Manchester HS where heptathlete Raven Jarrett of New Britain led Nia Christie of St. Joseph by a 2,582 to 2,519 margin. In the Boys Decathlon competition, Hunter Peterson of Bristol Central held a small 22-point lead over Matthew Santy of Enfield, 3,239 to 3,216 points.
The Girls' Heptathlon and Boys' Decathlon competition concludes today along with the finals of the Boys Hammer Throw and the Boys 3k Steeplechase Championships.
