Personal Bests Highlight the Connecticut Weight Throw Championship

msr  On Saturday, February 23rd, Bloomfield and Coventry co-hosted the Connecticut Weight Throw Championship at Bloomfield High School. The meet featured a clinic for athletes and coaches, followed by a Junior Varsity weight throw competition. At the conclusion of the JV meet, the best throwers in Connecticut assembled for a great competition where many of the athletes improved on their performance from the New England Championship.

In the Girls 20lb Weight Throw Championship event, Alliya Boothe of Bloomfield placed first with a PR throw of 51’3” ranking her 11th in the nation. Alliyah is also closing in on the state record in the event of 53’8.75” set by Karina Foster of Bloomfield in 2011. Runner-up in the championship was Leah Moore of Hillhouse with her PR throw of 48’8.5” while Southington’s Trinity Cardillo placed third with a toss of 44’8”. Finishing fourth was Otisha Williams of Bloomfield (40’5”) and followed in fifth place by Samantha Cerra of Tolland (39’3”).

In the Boys’ Championship event, six of the seven throwers gained their personal best marks. The top three throwers sent the 25lb weight over 60-feet. Michael Browning of RHAM threw 68’6” taking first place and ranking him 13th in the nation. Michael’s personal record throw has him close to the state record 69’7.25” set by Danbury’s Robert Guider in 2009. Joe Lanham of Coventry threw a PR 65’6.5” for second place, ranking him 27th in the nation as Aaron Williams of Bloomfield placed 3rd with a throw of 60’10” ranking him 50th in the nation.

Fourth place was earned by Nate Quaye of Manchester with his toss of 58’2” followed by Jonathan Prell of Simsbury (PR 54’11.5”), Nick Campbell of Bloomfield (PR 52’2.5”) and Connor Rose of Guilford (PR 39’3”).
