Trey Cormier, Kate Wiser Earn Individual Crowns at 84th New England Interscholastic XC Championships

The meet was held at Derryfield Park in Manchester NH on Saturday, November 10, 2018.

The Boys Championship race featured a 1-2 finish by Connecticut athletes led by senior Trey Cormier of Hall HS, West Hartford in a time of 15:56 and immediately followed by freshman Gavin Sherry of Conard HS, West Hartford (15:57) over the muddy 5km course. In his first victory of the season, Cormier joined former champions Trevor Hopper (Ridgefield-’13) and Ahmed Haji (Conard, ’03) as the only state athletes to win the New England Championship at Derryfield as well as becoming the 25th champion from Connecticut since its start in 1935. The only other state finishers in the top ten were Robbie Cozean (9th-16:14) and Dillon Selfors (10th-16:15), both of Xavier.

The Boys team tile was won by La Salle Academy of RI with 49 points over runner-up Bishop Hendricken RI with 80 points. Defending champion Xavier led a Connecticut 3-4-5-6 sweep with 111 pts followed by Hall (4th-169), Staples (5th-193) and Suffield (6th-208). The Tolland team placed 10th with 295pts while Danbury completed the state team placement at 14th with 415 points.

The Girls Championship race was highlighted by a victory by State Open champions Kate Wiser of Pomperaug in 18:04 over the 5km course, a 38-second margin over runner-up Sophia Reynolds of Merrimack Valley NH in 18:42. Top ten finishers included Mari Noble of Greenwich (4th-18:51), Claire Daniels of New Milford (7th-18:57) and Kathryn Rodrigues of Wolcott (9th-19:04).

The Girls team title was won by Champlain Valley VT with 78 points over runner-up La Salle Academy RI with 149 points. The Immaculate Girls team placed third with 187 points followed by Danbury (5th-208), Ridgefield (6th-273), Trumbull (7th-274) with Greenwich (10th-303) and Glastonbury (19th-481).
