State athletes earned victories and top team places at the 44th Manchester Invitational at Derryfield Park in Manchester NH today, the site of the 2018 New England XC Championship in November. With top teams attending from several New England states, the meet was highlighted with a victory by the Immaculate Girls team winning the Girls Varsity Small School race, a victory by sophomore Kate Wiser of Pomperaug in the Girls Varsity Large School race as well as Conard freshman Gavin Sherry’s victory in the Boys Varsity Large School race.
The Immaculate Girls team title, with 78 points over runner-up South Kingston RI (146 pts), was powered by a sixth place by Angela Saidman in 19:41 over the 5k course that was muddied in several areas around the park paths. New Fairfield placed fifth with 184 points as the other state team in the race.
Kate Wiser of Pomperaug finished first in the Girls Varsity Large School race in 17:49 over the 5k course as she edged runner-up Cali Coffin of Nashua South NH in 17:59. Other top state 25 finishers included Jenna Zydanowicz of Hall (4-18:53), Lauren Moore of Danbury (5-19:02), Kate Hedlund of Manchester (8-19:04), Frankie Lynch of Hall (24-19:52) and Grace Sparrow of Glastonbury (25-19:57). The team title was won by Champlain Valley-VT with 149 points followed by Hall in second place with 197 pts, Glastonbury third with 205 pts and Danbury fourth with 215 pts. Other state team finishes included Pomperaug (15-385), Manchester (25-625), RHAM (28-733) and Conard (33-826).
Freshman Gavin Sherry of Conard stretched his winning streak to four in a row in his early high school career as he bested Aidan Tierney of Bishop Hendricken-RI by a 15;49 to 15:56 margin over the 5k course in the Boys Varsity Large School race. Freshman Aidan Puffer of Manchester sped to a quick fifth place in 16:05 followed by Miller Anderson of Hall (7-16:10), Jacob Smith of Glastonbury (15-16:31), Yankarlos Diaz of Manchester (23-16:36), Matthew Reynolds of Hall (24-16:36), freshman Callum Sherry of Conard (27-16:42) and Sam Wilcox of Glastonbury (30-16:52). Bishop Hendricken-RI easily won the team title with 49 points as Hall placed fourth with 228 points, Conard in sixth with 259 pts, Danbury seventh with 273 pts and Glastonbury eighth with 307 pts. Other state teams scoring included Manchester (17-460) and Pomperaug (21-560).
The Boys Varsity Small School race included top finishes by Anthony Golino of New Fairfield in 13th at 17:17 behind winner David Reynolds of Merrimack Valley-NH in 16:15. Oyster River-NH won the team title with 97 points as Immaculate Boys placed seventh with 273 points followed by Fitch (14-415) and New Fairfield (17-477).
