Today at Manchester High School in Manchester CT the final day of competition concluded for the 2018 CIAC State Open CIAC State Open Track and Field Championship with victors crowned in the Boys Steeplechase, Boys Hammer Throw, Girls Heptathlon and Boys Decathlon.
Junior Shane Henderson of Old Saybrook improved on his fifth place from last year to win the gold medal in the CIAC Boys 3000m Steeplechase Championship in a time of 9:48.76 as silver medalist Eddie Nicholas of Nonnewaug finished in 9:55.46. Maximillian Sparks of Canton placed third in 10:07.08 followed by Andrew Burford of Amity (10:13.55), Aidan O’Donnell of Canton (10:14.97) and Alexandre Fishbein-Ouimette of Lyman Hall (10:22.66).
Defending champion Christian Sturm of St. Paul Catholic again won the CIAC Boys Hammer Throw Championship with a toss of 187-07 to set a personal record and a best mark in the state this season. Joseph Lanham of Coventry improved one place from last year to finish second with a mark of 173-05. Michael Browning of RHAM was the bronze medalist at 162-10 followed by Jonathan Prell of Simsbury (150-00), Dallas Tuttle of Pomperaug (134-00) and Aaron Williams of Bloomfield (130-08).
The final order of the first three places of the second day of competition in the CIAC State Open Girls Heptathlon was like the previous day as defending champion Kalli'Ana Botelho of Griswold retained her title in scoring 4,149 points to defeat silver medalist Carly Carpino of Avon with 4,114 points and bronze medalist Nia Christie of St. Joseph with 3,729 points. The remaining medalists included Darcy Cook of New Milford (3,413 pts), Jessica Savage of Bacon Academy (3,335 pts) and Morgan Dodge of Watertown (3,296 pts).
Shane Smith of Stonington improved significantly over his fifth-place last year to capture the gold medal in the CIAC State Open Boys Decathlon Championship with 5,791 points to edge runner-up Joshua Prouty of Ellington with 5,174 points and bronze medalist Jared Sharp of Suffield with 5,496 points. First day leader Tyler Seamans of Lyman Hall finished fourth (5,419 pts) followed by Aidan Kropiwnicki of Branford (5,356 pts) and Devin Wasilefsky of Glastonbury (5,310 pts).
