The windy conditions during the 2018 CIAC State Open Girls 2k Steeplechase at Manchester HS in Manchester CT on Tuesday didn’t seemingly affect the winning performance of 7:16.97 by senior Jacqueline Guerra of Guilford who used a last lap surge to pass 3-time defending champion Mary Bibbey of Nonnewaug who finished second in 7:28.21. They were followed by medalists Jane Frawley of Canton (7:31.71), Sydney Dzenutis of Northwestern Regional (7:32.67), Alessandra Zaffina (7:38.46) and Margaret LoSchiavo (7:39.40) of Trumbull in the field of 63 competitors.
Senior Amanda Howe of Southington added another championship title to her resume as she captured the 2018 CIAC State Open Girls Hammer Throw with a toss of 142-11 to outdistance runner-up Naomi Boisette of East Hartford with a mark of 128-05. They were trailed by bronze medalist Trinity Cardillo of Southington (121-05), Julia Groll of Southington (121-00), Hope Belvit of Bloomfield (117-10) and sixth place finisher Sydney Mello of Lewis Mills (115-11).
The first of two days in the CIAC State Open Girls' Heptathlon and Boys Decathlon competition were also conducted on Tuesday at Manchester HS where heptathlete Kalli'Ana Botelho of Griswold led Carly Carpino of Avon by a 2,717 to 2,518 margin. In the Boys Decathlon competition, Tylor Seamans of Lyman Hall held a narrow 59-point lead over Matthew Santy of Enfield, 3.111 to 3,052 points.
The Girls' Heptathlon and Boys' Decathlon competition concludes today along with the finals of the Boys Hammer Throw and the Boys 3k Steeplechase Championships.
