Senior Drew Thompson of Fairfield Prep earned a first place at the 83rd New England Interscholastic XC Championship Boys Race today at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast Maine to add to his recent State Open Championship title. Thompson finished the 5k course in a very quick 15:16 that moved him into second place on the course all-time list behind the top time of 15:07 by Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar ME in 2013. Thompson joined Brian McGovern as a Fairfield Prep New England champion where McGovern won in 1999 and 2000.
Connecticut was well represented in the top ten individual finishers as Brendan Murray of Cheshire placed third in 15:51 followed by Benjamin Seiple of Staples (5-15:53), Robert Dillon of Shelton (6-15:54), Christian Myers of Staples (7-15:56), and Maximillian Sparks of Canton (9-16:00). Other top 25 All New England individuals included William Landowne of Staples (11-16:01), Dillon Selfors of Xavier (12-16:02), Owen Curran of Xavier (13-16:02), Joe Pearl of Manchester (15-16:03), Trey Cormier of Hall (17-16:04), Killian McNamee of Tolland (21-16:07), Alex Mocarski of Fairfield-Warde (22-16:10) and Robbie Cozean of Xavier (23-16:13).
The Xavier Boys team captured their sixth New England Interscholastic XC Championship and first since 1997 with a total of 74 points to outdistance runner-up and defending champion Staples with 103 points. Their team victory featured the top 25 places by Dillon Selfors, Owen Curran and Robbie Cozean as well as a 30th place by Peter Schulten (16:19) and a 31st place by William Curran (16:20). The other state teams all placed in the top ten slots including Fairfield Warde (6-212), Fairfield Prep (7-224), Haddam-Killingworth (8-266) and Hall (9-328).
In the 83rd New England Interscholastic XC Championship Girls Race senior State Open Champion Morgan McCormack of Wilton placed fourth in 17:50 behind the winning time of 17:31 by junior Julia Robitaille of Manchester West NH. Close at her heels across the finish line was freshman Katherine Wiser of Pomperaug with her fifth place finish in 17:53. The remaining top 25 All New England individuals included Meredith Bloss of Guilford (13-18:33), Angela Saidman of Immaculate (21-18:43) and Kylie Raymond of Somers (24-18:44).
The Pinkerton NH girls team from New Hampshire took team honors with 163 points followed by Bishop Guertin, NH with 183 points just ahead of third place Glastonbury with 212 points. The remaining state teams included Danbury (8-251), Pomperaug (10-293), Haddam-Killingworth (13-346), Trumbull (16-408) and Guilford (20-433).
