Gold Medals Won by Falcioni, Hoelzl, Warner and Griffith in Final Day of CIAC State Open Outdoor Track and Field Championship

Perfect weather surrounded the final four events of the 2016 CIAC State Open Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Willow Brook Park in New Britain CT as gold medals were earned in the Boys Steeplechase, Boys Hammer Throw, Girls Heptathlon and Boys Decathlon.

After a runner-up finish last year, senior CJ Falcioni of Seymour won the Boys Hammer Throw Championship with a toss of 155’9”. Dmitri Van Duine of Stonington placed second with a mark of 153’8” followed by William Briggs of Canton (3rd-144’6”), Christian Sturm of St Paul (4th-138’9”), Charles Ritzel of Seymour (5th-137’5”) and Kyle Root of Gilbert School (6th-131’2”).

Justin Hoelzl of Staples prevailed in the Boys 3000m Steeplechase Championship with a winning time or 9:55.68 over runner-up David Clavet of Ellington in 10:00.68. Michael Petillo of Stratford placed third in 10:07.32 followed by Michael Bortolot of Joel Barlow (4th-10:20.76), Peter Bakker of NW Regional (5th-10:24.20) and Jeff Giusto of Woodland (6th-10:31.15).

First day leader Kenya Warner of Windsor continued her strong performance in the second day of competition in the Girls Heptathlon Championship to win with 4,007 points over runner-up Jasmine Grey of Naugatuck with 3,850 points. Warner gathered the top mark in the Long Jump while earning solid points in 200m, High Jump and 100m Hurdles to secure the title. Danielle Brinckman of Glastonbury placed third with 3,740 points followed by Tamara McCrobie of Bunnell (4th-3,725 pts), Claira Janover of Branford (5th-3,711 pts) and Claudia Hess of Hall (6th-3,665 pts).

In the Boys Decathlon Championship, first day leader Mike Griffith of East Haven continued his effort over the final five events to win with 5,915 points over runner-up Devin Shelton of Tolland with 5,662 points. Griffith captured important points with event wins in the Long Jump, Shot Put and a strong effort in the 100m Dash to win the multi-event title. Lucas Sumby of Old Saybrook placed third with 5,551 points followed by Dan Brown of Lyman Memorial (4th-5,418 pts), Nicholas Pronovost of Coventry (5th-5,392 pts) and Joshua Prouty of Ellington (6th-5,338 pts).
