In the finals Monday afternoon of the 2016 CIAC State Open Girls 2k Steeplechase at Willow Brook Park in New Britain CT Mary Bibbey of Nonnewaug successfully defended her title from last season with a time of 7:10.25. Runner-up Gabrielle Napoli of Southington finished in 7:19.37 followed by Lauren Moore of Danbury (3rd-7:31.48), Hayley Collins of Tolland (4th-7:35.11), Susannah Martin of Staples (5th-7:44.00) and Lauren Daddi of Cheshire (6th-7:45.03).
The finals of the 2016 CIAC State Open Girls Hammer Throw Championship were also contested on Monday afternoon with Erica Belvit of Bloomfield earning top honors with a toss of 150’6”, only 1-inch less than the meet record. Teammate Brittany Jones was second with a throw of 145’7” followed by Amanda Howe of Southington (3rd-136’2”), Jesica Litwa of Seymour (4th-121’5”), Lauren Gilderdale (5th-115’7”) and Lauren Palmer of St Paul (6th-115’0”).
In the first of two days in the Girls' Heptathlon and Boys Decathlon competition, the early leaders are Kenya Warner of Windsor with 2,630 points and Mike Griffith of East Haven with 3,342 points. The Boys' Decathlon and Girls' Heptathlon competition concludes today along with the finals of the Boys Hammer Throw and the Boys 3k Steeplechase Championships.
