A new face and a seasoned veteran scored victories today in the finals of the 2015 CIAC State Open Girls 2k Steeplechase and Girls Hammer Throw at Willow Brook Park in New Britain CT.
In the Girls 2k Steeplechase Championship race, freshman Mary Bibbey of Nonnewaug finished first with a 7:14.04 effort ahead of teammate sophomore Emily Wingard in 7:29.29. Erica Randazzo of Westhill finished third in 7:31.28 followed by Mari Larcheveque of RHAM (4th-7:33.31), Emma Dolen of East Catholic (5th-7:35.27) and Katelynn Romanchick of Trumbull (6th-7:37.71).
In the Girls Hammer Throw Championship, senior Danika Okasia of Bloomfield won with a toss of 141-01 in her first throw as she significantly improved over her second place finish last year with a throw of 126-11. Teammate Faith Estelle placed second with a throw of 139-07 as she also made considerable improvement over her third place toss of 126-02 last season. Jessica Litwa of Seymour was third with a throw of 110-11 followed by Brittany Jones of Bloomfield (4th-108-03), Lauren Palmer of St Paul Catholic (5th-105-09) and Angela Tabor of Housatonic Regional (6th-102-05).
In the first of two days in the Boys' Decathlon and Girls' Heptathlon competition, the early leaders are Damon Vega of Windham Tech with 3362 points followed by Bailey Raymond of Fermi with 3226 points while in the Girls multi-event, Jillian Kilmer of St Paul Catholic (2621 points) and Jaliyah White of Hillhouse (2607) are locked in close competition.
The Boys' Decathlon and Girls' Heptathlon competition concludes Wednesday along with the finals of the Boys Hammer Throw and the Boys 3k Steeplechase Championships.
