Featured Meet - Torrington Girls
and Naugatuck Boys Claim NVL Crowns
(May 23, 2007 - 7:00am - Ron Knapp) As the 2007 Naugatuck Valley League Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded on late Monday afternoon at Watertown High School, the Torrington Girl's Team was crowned as a new team champion while the Naugatuck Boy's Team successfully defended their title from last year. The Torrington Girl's Team scored 172 points to claim the team title while defending champion Seymour was second with 136 points. The Naugatuck Boy's Team amassed 167 points to out-distance runner-up Wilby with 128 points. The Torrington Girl's team winning effort was propelled by two wins from Rosa Morriello in the 1600m Run (5:19.33) and the 3200m run (11:45.66), a first place from Sheena Spear in the 100m Dash (12.86), wins from both the 4x800m relay team (10:01.93) and the 4x100m relay quarter in a meet record (50.79). Torrington also scored important points from the jumper duo of Kelsey McKenna, first in the Long Jump (16'8") - second in the Triple Jump (33'6") while Brooke Johnson leaped to a meet record in the Triple Jump (36'5") and was second in the Long Jump (16'4.5"). Johnson also scored a second place in the High Jump behind winner Jasmine Cribb of Naugatuck (5'2"). Torrington also received second place points from Lizzy Marola in the 200m Dash behind winner Cornieta Anderson of Kennedy (26.42) and Christina Ponte in the 800m who followed Nicole Dow of Seymour (2:25.19) across the line. Other meet highlights in the Girls Championship included two wins by Noelly Germosen of Wilby in the 100m and 300m Hurdles (15.33, 45.21), a meet record by Jess Biercevicz of Seymour in the Javelin Throw (126'2"), Tori Pisco of Naugatuck in the 400m Dash (59.44) and the Seymour 4x400m relay team (4:08.35). Other field event winners included Clare Kostka of Seymour in the Pole Vault (9'6"), Kayla Williams of Naugatuck in the Shot Put (34'5.5") and Courtney Ambrose of Sacred Heart in the Discus Throw (105'7"). As the 2006 Boy's Team Champion, Naugatuck stepped up to the challenge to successfully defend their team title led by the eforts of double-winner Josh Perry in the 400m Dash (50.97) and the 800m (1:57.61) as well as a meet record from their 4x400m relay squad (3:25.53). Naugatuck also received victories from Andrew Corridore in the 110m Hurdles (14.69), Judson Brown in the Triple Jump (43'10"), Ryan Culbertson in the Shot Put (47'7.5") and Pat Barrett in the Discus Throw (143'9"). Significant points were also scored by Andrew Harriott in the 100m Dash behind winner Duanne Bennett of Wilby (11.15) and Corridore in the 200m Dash in a close finish to winner Dan Awwad of Holy Cross (22.55). The Boy's Championship also featured a double victory by Joe Poulson of Seymour in the 1600m Run in a meet record 4:26.67 and the 3200m Run (10:02.03). His Seymour teammate, Bill Stocmal, won the 300m Hurdles (41.25) while their 4x100m Relay quartet sped across the line in 43.88 for the win. The Wilby 4x800m relay team set a meet record in their victory as they finished in 8:16.25. Other field event champions included Marcus James of Wilby in the High Jump (6'2"), Brian Stowe of Seymour in the Pole Vault (13'), Devin Pinder of Wilby in the Long Jump (20'7") and Eric Alfiere of Woodland Regional in the Javelin Throw (173'11"). |
