Highlights of the New England
Interscholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships (June 9, 2007 - 11:30pm - Ron Knapp) Once again Connecticut athletes acquitted themselves well with one state record and many with personal or school records at the 62nd Annual New England Interscholastic Track and Field Championships on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at Fitchburg State College in Fitchburg, MA. In the Women's New England Championship, Connecticut started out on the right note as the Conard 4x800m quartet of Caitlin Cannon, Sophia Harrington, Molly Fresher and Emma Perron ran to a school record 9:12.87 to win the event; Glastonbury (4th-9:23.05), East Lyme (5th-9:26.06) and Amity (9:29.72) also placed in the top six spots to earn All New England honors. Sprinter Shelby Walton of Danbury was a double event winner in taking both dashes, the 100m (12.16) and 200m (25.04). In the 100m dash, Walton led a Nutmeg 1-2-3 sweep as she was followed by Chelsea Jubrey of Rockville and Shaniqua Burgess of Hillhouse. In the 400m dash, Connecticut athletes Sam Willis of Tolland and Leah Clement of East Lyme were medalists as they placed 4th and 6th respectively behind winner Anna Cioffredi of Lebanon NH (55.59). The 800m run was a close race as Jamie Olson of Glastonbury was edged at the line by Catherine Ressijac of Bishop Guertin, 2:11.46 to 2:11.54. State medalists in the 1600m run included Anna Sheilds of Lewis Mills (4th-4:59.26) and Alasia Griebel of Bristol Central (5th-4:59.68) as they trailed winner Keely Maguire of Triton Regional MA across the line in 4:55.95. In the 4x100m relay, only Rockville (3rd-49.72) and Hyde (5th-49.98) were able to medal as they trailed winner Andover MA (48.98). In the hurdle events, Lauren Tanz of Brookfield was 3rd (15.00) and Jillian Sabol of Thomaston was 6th (15:38) as they followed winner Lauren Barber of New Bedford MA (14.59) through the tape. Catherine Milledge of Weaver was the only state medalist in the 300m hurdles placing 3rd (45.18) to winner Stephanie Reusch of Old Rochester MA (43.65). In the 3200m run, Connecticut had three medalists behind winner Emily Jones of Bromfield MA (10:25.20); Heather Stephens of Ridgefield (3rd-10:53.60), Anna Shields of Lewis Mills (4th-10:53.83) and Stacey Marion of Simsbury (6th-10:55.94). In the final track event of the day, the Manchester 4x400m relay squad of Alia Verner, Shaina Barr, Shaquanna Applewhite and Elsa Millett ran 3:55.56 to take first place honors. New England Championship honors were also awarded in field events to state athletes including Cherelle Allen of New Britain in the Long Jump where she placed first with a leap of 18'0" while Whitney Holder of Middletown was sixth (17'7"). Allen also place fifth in the Triple Jump (36'11.25"). In the High Jump, Jasmine Cribb of Naugatuck was 3rd (5'4"), Allison Barwise of Amity was 4th (5'4") while Hali Dengenis of Brien McMahon was 6th (5'4"). In the throwing events, Candace Williams of Notre Dame placed second in the Shot Put (41'6.5"), Sharmaine Gregor of East Lyme was 4th in the Discus Throw (127'7") while in the Javelin Throw, Jessica Biercevicz of Seymour was 4th (129'3") and Fotini Xenidis of Shelton was 6th (122'8"). The Men's New England Championship
featured a winning performance of 7:42.86 by the Danbury 4x800m relay team
of Doug Ronan, David Zimmerman, Justin Rau and Willie Ahearn that also
established a new state record previously held by Danbury (7:49.20 -
2001). Wilton also medaled with a third place time of 7:48.61. In the
sprint events, Trevardo Williams of Bridgeport Central finished second
(10.94) while Joshua Massey of Notre Dame was sixth (11.17). In the 200m
dash, Michael Lorick of Danbury placed second (21.92) and Kevin Smith of
Lewis Mills placed fifth (22.31). In a close finish in the 400m dash, both
Tyler O'Brien of Rocky Hill (2nd-48.97) and Alex Anderson of Enfield
(3rd-49.18) were edged by David Kennedy of Lamoille VT (48.55). State Open
champion Parker Bourdeau of Danbury took second (1:55.23) behind winner
Bryan Longo of Lexington MA (1:54.57); also placing were Josh Perry of
Naugatuck (4th-1:55.64) and Scott Johnson of Lyme-Old Lyme (5th-1:56.87).
The top state finisher in the 1600m run was Dan Pilz of Newington
(3rd-4:17.57). In the 3200m run, Matt Terry of Danbury led a 1-3-4-5
placing of state athletes as he finished in 9:08.44; followed by Wesley
Halstead (3rd-9:13.11), Everett Hackett of Wm. Hall (4th-9:13.86) and
Andrew Judd of Conard (5th-9:14.14). In the 110m Hurdles, Iren Williams of
Weaver was gold medalist with a time of 14.64 while Robert Walker of Hyde
was sixth in 14.96. The only state medalist in the 300m hurdles was winner
Andrew Fitzgerald of Northwest Regional with a time of 39.00. The 4x100m
relay featured a second place by Danbury (43.08) and a third place by
Enfield (43.16). In the final track event of the meet, Woburn MA ran
3:21.20 to edge Naugatuck (3:21.61) and Staples (3:21.69) at the line; the
Danbury squad also placed sixth (3:23.78). In the field events, state
athletes who earned New England medals included Nicholas Frimpong of East
Hartford in the High Jump as he cleared 6'6" to win while Richard Haigh of
Amity finished sixth (6'2"). In the Long Jump, Devin Pinder of Wilby
earned a silver medal with a leap of 22'7.5" while Michael Hartfield of
Manchester was sixth (21'6.5"). In the Triple Jump, Hartfield was second
(45'), Frimpong fourth (44'8.75") and Pinder fifth (44'7.75"). State
throwers netted four places led by a victory by Eric Alfiere of Woodland
in the Javelin Throw with a toss of 187'8"; Ben Latham of Fitch was fifth
(172'3"). In the Discus Throw, Nicholas Fedor of Amity was second (164'9")
while Greg Manzolillo of Xavier was fifth (152'6"). |
