Hartford Public Invitational - A Featured Meet Preview...

The 36th Hartford Public High School Outdoor Track and Field Invitational returns to the Veterans Stadium in New Britain, Connecticut for a second year as a number of top athletes from the Northeast are scheduled to compete on Saturday, May 12, 2007 starting at 9:30am.

In the Men's events, there are several top performers on both the track and in the field. Based upon submitted entries, athletes scheduled to appear on the track in the 100m Dash are Marcus Campbell of Bloomfield CT (10.60) with competition from Naheem McNeil of Hempstead NY (10.70) and Kevin Morgan of Hope RI (10.70). In the 110m Hurdles Darryl Bradshaw of Sheepshead Bay NY (14.20) will contend with Peter Conti (14.40) and Matt Callanan (14.50) of Mansfield MA and James Goodliffe of Hunterdon Central NJ (14.40). In the 200m Dash , Stephan McLean of Transit Tech NY (21.70) starts against Dwayne Stewart of Bloomfield (21.70) and Tyler O'Brien of Rocky Hill CT (21.85). The 400m race features two sub-49 second competitors; Nick Colontouno of Lincoln Sudbury MA (48.40) and David Kennedy of Lamoille Union VT (48.97). The 400m Intermediate Hurdles has Brian Furr of Sheepshead Bay NY (53.21) and Stephan McLean of Transit Tech NY (53.50) in a tight duel. The 800m run has no clear cut favorite with several at 1:57 and the two top runners, Brian Robbins of Bristol Central CT (1:56.00) and Chris Collins of Wilton CT (1:56.90) expected to lead the pack. The 1-Mile run also features several competitors with similar entry times led by Andrew Springer of Westerly RI (4:20), Dan Pilz of Newington CT (4:21), Nicholas Ryan of Cambridge Rindge Latin MA (4:22), Brendan Hyland of Concord NH (4:22.30) and Will Griffin of East Catholic CT (4:23.25). The Men's 2-Mile Run is highlighted by top seed Mark Amirault of Xaverian Bros. MA with an entry time of 9:01.70, followed by Ryan Collins of Mansfield MA (9:10.95), Robert Gibson (9:17.65) and Kevin Gill (9:22.89) of Brookline MA.

The Men's Relay events are loaded with talent and speed as well as Bloomfield CT leads the entries in the 4x100m relay with a 41.60 time while Hope RI (42.70) and Transit Tech (42.70) are sure to be close at the finish. The 4x200m Relay features Sheepshead Bay NY (1:27.76), Bloomfield CT (1:28.89), Hempstead NY (1:29.00) and Hope RI (1:29.70). The top teams in the 4x400m Relay include Transit Tech NY (3:20.00), Wilby CT (3:24.00) and Weaver CT (3:25.00). The 1600m Sprint Medley Relay (200-200-400-800) features Sheepshead Bay NY (3:29.97), Bristol Central CT (3:31.50) and Union Catholic NJ (3:31.50). The 4x800m relay is headed by Lincoln Sudbury MA (8:00) followed by Wilby CT (8:06.00) and Union Catholic NJ (8:09.00).

In the Men's Field events, top performers include Mike Hartfield of Manchester CT in the Long Jump (23-02), Nick Frimpong of East Hartford CT in the High Jump (6-8), Justin Wilson of Windsor CT in the Triple Jump (47-8) and Matt Alexander of Windham Tech in the Pole Vault (14-2) dueling with Pat Wasczak of Bacon Academy CT (14-0). In the Men's Throwing events, Greg Manzolillo of Xavier CT heads the Shot Put (53-10) and the Discus (164-4) entrants. The Javelin throw has two top competitors with Jeff Baker of Lyman Hall CT (192-9) and Miles Snelgrove of Lyman Memorial CT (190-4). The Hammer throw will feature Ryan Loughney of Tri Valley Central NY with a 206-6 entry.

The Women's events are a showcase of talent from the Northeast as well featuring top performers in both track and field events. On the track, the 100m dash features four athletes with Maxine Moody of Hempstead NY (12.00), Madalayne Smith of Saratoga Springs NY (12.00), Sheveena Rowe of Tilden NY and Shelby Walton of Danbury CT (12.10). In the 100m Hurdles, there are three top contenders under 15 seconds with Gehian Regis of Robeson NY (14.60), Madalayne Smith of Saratoga Springs NY (14.80) and Lauren Tanz of Brookfield CT (14.96). The 200m Dash features Rene Cousins of Hempstead NY (25.20), Altagracia Vasquez of A. Philip Randolph NY (25.80) and Whitney Holder of Middletown CT (25.84). The 40m Run pits 2 sub 57 second competitors against each other as Sheina Roberts of Bishop Loughlin NY (56.29) and Charelene Lipsey of Hempstead NY (56.80) square off in the last heat. The final heat of the 400m Intermediate Hurdles features Gehian Regis of Robeson NY (61.30) and Alexandria Lyles of Bishop Loughlin NY (62.08). The 800m run is highlighted by three runners under 2:18 with Emma Perron of Conard CT (2:16.20), Emily Mepham of Lincoln Sudbury MA (2:17.21) and Alasia Griebel of Bristol Central CT (2:17.72). The fast heat of the 1-Mile run features several Connecticut contenders under 5:10 with Jamie Olson of Glastonbury (5:00.03), Alasia Griebel of Bristol Central (5:06.00), Christine Vogel of Glastonbury (5:07.63) Shelby Donahue of Griswold (5:08.08) and Caitlin Cannon of Conard (5:09.12). The Women's 2000m Steeplechase should be competitive as several of the top competitors include Rebecca Coady of Annapolis West Canada (6:53.41), Karen Roa of St. Francis NY (7:08.70) and Jess Barton of Newton North MA (7:10.00). The last heat of 2-Mile run features two Saratoga Springs NY runners, Hannah Davidson (10:35.00) and Brianne Bellon (11:00.00) as well as several under the 11:10 mark with Caitlin Cannon of Conard CT (11:03.99), Dana Troy of Lyman Memorial CT (11:06.06) and Emma Perron of Conard CT (11:09.35).

In the Women's relay events, Weaver CT and Hempstead NY are the top two teams in the 4x100m relay with times of 48.50 while Danbury CT is close at 48.65. The 4x200m relay will also feature Hempstead NY (1:40.00), Danbury (1:44.26) and Weaver (1:44.50) in the last heat. The last heat of the 4x400m relay should be exciting as Bishop Loughlin NY (3:55.00), Weaver CT (3:59.00), Tilden NY (4:00), Lincoln Sudbury MA (4:00) and Westerly RI (4:01) are all in the hunt for a win. The 1600m Sprint Medley Relay pits Bishop Loughlin NY (4:03.90) against Tilden NY (4:04.47) as the top two seeds. The last heat of the 4x800m relay includes six teams under the 9:45 mark led by Saratoga Springs NY (9:25.00), Westerly RI (9:25.00), Conard CT (9:32.00), Amity CT (9:38.55), Tilden NY (9:39.16) and Glastonbury CT (9:41.00).

The Women's field events top performers include Cherelle Allen of New Britain CT in the Long Jump (18-1), Camille Quarles of Pinkerton Academy NH in the Triple Jump (38-0.25) and in the Pole Vault, Jessica Sullivan of Norwich Free Academy CT and Sophia Romeri of Lincoln Sudbury MA both have cleared 11'0". In the High Jump, a trio of jumpers have cleared the 5'6" mark including Sarah Sherman of Essex VT, Laura Maessen of Dartmouth Canada and Allison Barwise of Amity CT. The throwing events feature Becky O'Brien of Greely ME in the Shot Put (43-9.75) and Discus (132-04), Amanda Nappi of Windham (135-10) in the Javelin Throw and Melissa Johnson of Ward Melville NY in the Hammer throw (113-02).
