Championships

Many state teams used their conference meets to prepare for the CIAC State
Meets that start on Tuesday, May 29th at either Manchester High School or
Willowbrook Park in New Britain. A quick review of the conference meet
highlights will provide you with a preview of some of the teams and
athletes to watch during the CIAC State Meets.

Shoreline Conference (5/21/2007)
At the Shoreline Conference Championships held on Monday, May 21st at
Valley Regional High School in Deep River CT, the Coginchaug Boys Team and
the East Hampton Girls Team clinched team titles. The Coginchaug Boys Team
scored 147 points to outlast runner-up Old Saybrook with 93 points;
Coginchaug received wins from their 4x100m relay, Adrian Burnett in the
200m and 400m, Michael Simon in the Long Jump and Javelin, Matt
Bartholomew in the Shot Put, Ram Dealy in the High Jump and Brendan Decker
in the Triple Jump. New conference member East Hampton Girls Team defeated
2006 champion Haddam-Killingworth by a 144 to 127 point margin. East
Hampton was fueled by wins from their 4x800m relay team, Elizabeth Plummer
in the 100m and 300m Hurdles, Sherri Gamberale in the 100m and 200m
dashes, Cora Gingras in the High Jump, and Sarah Kemp in the Discus Throw.
Southwest Conference (5/21-22/2007)
At the Southwest Conference Championships held on Monday, May 21st at
Masuk High School and May 22nd at New Fairfield High School, The Bunnell
Boys and the Weston Girls teams claimed conference titles. Bunnell scored
a close 96.5 to 91 point victory over runner-up New Milford, their top
winning performers included Angelo Watson in the 100m, Jeff Williams in
the Triple Jump, Shane Rodgers in the Shot Put and Mark Harrison in the
Long Jump. The Weston Girls Team took the title with a 118.5 to 111 point
victory over runner-up Bunnell. Weston scored first places in the 4x100m
and 4x400 relays as well as wins from Ali Atkinson in the 200m and 400m
dashes, Rebecca Fine in the 800m run and Julie Sitver in the Pole Vault.
One of the top state athletes, Lauren Tanz of Brookfield, scored four wins
in the High and Long Jumps and the 100m and 300m Hurdles. Moira Kenny of
Immaculate won both the 1600m and 3200m runs in meet record times (5:09.68
and 11:04.18).
NCCC Conference Championships
(5/22/2007)
The Tolland High School Boys and Girls Teams swept the North Central
Connecticut Conference Championships held at their school on Tuesday, May
22nd. The Tolland Boys Team defeated runner-up Ellington by a 156 to 113
margin while the Tolland Girls scored 217 points to easily out distance
runner-up Suffield with 131.5 points. The Tolland Boys team win featured
victories by their 4x800m, 4x100m and 4x40m relay teams, Alex Froning in
the 110m Hurdles, David Macklem in the 800m and 1600m runs and Alex Fallon
in the Javelin throw. The Tolland Girls team title was powered by wins
from their 4x100m and 4x40m relay teams, Karen Gurnon in the 800m and
1600m runs, Amy Dwire in the 400m dash and Pole Vault, Sam Willis in the
300m Hurdles and 200m dash, Aicha Diaby in the Triple Jump, Angie Maher in
the Shot Put and Discus Throw, and Marissa Boucher in the Javelin Throw.
CCC-West Conference Championships

The defending champions Bloomfield Boys and William Hall-West Hartford
Girls teams returned to the winner's circle on Tuesday, May 22nd at
Bloomfield High School at the Central Connecticut Conference-West
Championships. The Bloomfield Boys team overcame runner-up Conard-West
Hartford by a 129 to 109 point score while the William Hall-West Hartford
Girls team edged Weaver-Hartford by a 158 to 157 point margin. The winning
performers for the Bloomfield Boys team came from the Marcus Campbell in
the 100m and 200m dashes, Marcus Cooper in the High Jump, Mikell Branch in
the Pole Vault and their 4x100m relay squad. The William Hall-West
Hartford Girls team victory was clinched in the final event of the day,
the High Jump, when Bethany Halligan won with a third by Jenna London.
Hall also received first place finishes from Llana Shemkovitz in the Pole
Vault, Rachel Morgan in the Discus Throw, Fee Gjonbalaj in the Javelin
Throw, and Stephanie Bohannon in the 1600m. Weaver had three double
winners; Christine Jones won the 100m and Long Jump, Shaena Gray won the
200m and 400m dashes and Clervine Sanon won both hurdle events. One of the
top performances of the meet came from senior Emma Perron of Conard in the
800m where she broke the tape in 2:16.57, she also won the 3200m in
11:38.77.
CCC-North Conference Championships
(5/22/2007)
The Glastonbury Boys and Girls Teams grabbed both team championships
at the Central Connecticut Conference-North Championships on Tuesday, May
22nd at Simsbury High School. The Glastonbury Girls team scored 181 points
to overcome runner-up Simsbury with 131 points. Their victory was
energized by victories from their 4x800m relay team, Sarah Kwok in the
100m Hurdles, Jamie Olson in the 1600m run, Natalie Bonham in the 300m
Hurdles, Christina Vogel in the 3200m run and Jill Pizzo in the Pole
Vault. Two New Britain athletes scored double wins as Cherelle Allen won
the Long Jump and Triple Jump and Althalia Smith won the Shot Put and
Discus Throw. The Glastonbury Boys Team win over runner-up Manchester was
close, 154 to 146 points, as they received first place finishes from their
three relay teams, Rob Dugger in the 1600m run, Cody Otto in the 320mm run
and Mike Goulet in the Shot Put, and Discus Throw. Top state performers
won two events as Nana Ocran of Manchester took the 100m and 200m dashes
and Nick Frimpong of East Harford won the Triple and High Jumps.
FCIAC Girls Championships (5/22/2007)
The Danbury Girls Team used sprint power to propel themselves to the
Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championship title on
Tuesday, May 22nd at Ridgefield High School. Danbury scored 58 of their
114 points in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay to narrowly defeat runner-up
Darien with 98.33 points. Danbury received wins from Shelby Walton in the
100m and 200m dashes and their 4x100m and 4x800m relay teams. Double event
winners included Heather Stephens of Ridgefield in the 1600m and 3200m
runs, Anita Souza of Central in the hurdles, Meg Gilbert of Darien in the
High and Long Jumps, Rebecca Leeds of Greenwich in the 400m and Triple
Jump and Julia Arduini of Fairfield Warde in the Shot Put and Javelin
Throw.
SCC Championships, (5/22-23/2007)
As the host school and defending champions, the Amity Boys and Girls
teams seized the team titles again in competition on Tuesday, May 22nd and
Wednesday, May 23rd at the Southern Connecticut Championships. The Amity
Boys Team edged runner-up Xavier-Middletown by a 100.5 to 97.5 point score
while the Amity Girls Team took the title over second place Hillhouse-New
Haven by a 86 to 69 point margin. The Amity Boys team received first place
points from only three events - their 4x800m relay, Cole Crotta in the
Pole Vault and Nicholas Fedor in the Shot Put. Double event winners
included Craig Kinsley of Fairfield Prep in the High Jump and 110m Hurdles
and Adam Vess of Xavier in the 1600m and 3200m runs. The team title
victory by the Amity Girls team was driven by wins from Annelies Gamble in
the 800m run, Alison Barwise in the 300m hurdles and High Jump and their
4x800m relay quartet. Other double event winners were Fotini Xendis of
Shelton in the Javelin and Discus throws, Ann-Marie Clarke of Hillhouse in
the 100m hurdles and 400m dash, Shaniqua Burgess of Hillhouse in the 100m
and 200m dashes, and Courtney Dinnan of Hamden in the 1600m and 3200m
runs.
NorthWest Conference (5/23/2007)
The Berlin Girls Team and the Middletown Boys Team easily won the
Northwest Conference Championships held at Rocky Hill High School on
Wednesday, May 23rd. The Berlin Girls Team defeated runner-up Middletown
by a 153 to 101 point margin and the Middletown Boys Team took first place
over second place finisher Farmington by a 163 to 113.5 point score. The
Berlin Girls Team received first place efforts from only their 4x100m
relay team, Krista Sullivan in the Pole Vault, Sarah Hansen in the Triple
Jump and Ronnie Roche in the Javelin Throw. Whitney Holder of Middletown
won three events, the Long Jump and 100m and 200m dashes. Teammate Kelly
Flannigan won both the 1600m and 3200m runs while Jackie Beliveau of NW
Catholic won both hurdle races. The Middletown Boys Team earned their team
title with wins from Lorenzo Baker in the 200m, their 4x100m and 4x400
relays and Joe Belin in the High and Triple Jumps. Will Griffin of East
Catholic won both the 1600m and 3200m runs while Tyler O'Brien of Rocky
Hill won the 100m and 400m dashes.
CCC-South Championships (5/22-23/2007)
At the Central Connecticut Conference-South Championships, Bristol Central
seized both Boys and Girls team titles; the Boys team overcame runner-up
Newington by a 161 to 139 score while the Girls team also defeated
runner-up Newington by a 177 to 130 score. The Bristol Central Boys team
used first places from Josh Darveau-Simmons in the Long Jump, Matt
Petersen in the Triple Jump, Brian Robbins in the 800m run and all three
relays to power their team victory. Romain Washington-Duke of Bristol
Eastern won both the 200m and 400m dashes as well. The Bristol Central
Girls team win featured wins from their 4x800m relay team, Meredith Rogers
in the 100m Hurdles, Alasia Griebel in the 800m and 1600m runs, Jasmine
Smith in the Triple Jump and Kelly Lejeune in the Javelin Throw. Vlada
Shelkova of Newington was a double winner in the Long Jump and Pole Vault
while Allie Derosier of Bristol Eastern won both the 100m and 200m dashes.
CSC Championships (5/24/2007)
Close finishes for the team title highlighted the Constitution State
Conference Championships held on Thursday, May 24th at Buckley High School
in Hartford. The first year member Parish Hill Girls Team defeated 2006
titlist Kaynor Tech by a 138 to 123 point margin while defending champion
AI Prince Tech of Harford won again over runner-up Windham Tech, 180 to
171 points. Parish Hill Girls scored in almost every event and won only
two events; Darcy Rose in the 100m Hurdles and Ashley Macdonald in the
Discus Throw. Classical Magnet won all three relays while Cyemone
Wolliston won all three jumping events. Teammate Tina Thomas won both the
200m and 400m dashes. Evie Mullins of Windham Tech was another triple
winner taking the 800m, 1600m and 3200m runs under hot and humid
conditions. The AI Prince Tech Boys team won several events on route to
their team title with first places from their 4x100m, 4x400m and 4x800m
relay teams, Tyrell Carter in the High Jump, Andrew Johnson in both hurdle
races and Chris Johnson in the 200m dash. Athletes who won three events
included Jess Quick of Windham Tech in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m runs and
teammate Mike Wilder in the Shot Put, Discus Throw and Javelin Throw.
