Danbury Men's Team
Returns - Vess Takes Record 3200m at CIAC State Open
Meet (June 6, 2007 - 11:45pm - Ron Knapp) The Danbury Men's Team returned to the winner's podium after almost a decade at the CIAC State Open Championship on Wednesday, June 6th at Willowbrook Park in New Britain and Adam Vess of Xavier broke the 3200m Run State and Meet records as he won in 9:00.20. Unlike their last win in 1998 when the Danbury Men's team last took home the Open plaque in a close win over Xavier, their victory this year was relatively easier as they scored 90 points to overpower the remainder of the field including runner-up Manchester with 44 points and Glastonbury with 41 points. The return of Danbury to the championship title was fueled by first place efforts from Bryan LeBlanc in the Shot Put (55'5"), Parker Bourdeau in the 800m (1:53.01), their 4x400m quartet who just edged Staples (3:24.56 to 3:24.94) and their 4x800m relay squad in a near record 7:53.67 as the top four teams finished under the 8-minute mark; Glastonbury (7:54.30), Wilton (7:54.97) and Manchester (7:59.90). The meet record of 8:53.30 was set by Shelton in 2005. Danbury also received key points with second places from their 4x100m relay team as they finished behind winner Enfield (42.95), Justin Chiaravalle in the 110m Hurdles was edged by Robert Walker of Hyde School (14.55) and from Michael Lorick in the 200m as he finished behind winner Terrell Wilks of Hillhouse (21.42). Wilks was also the winner of the 100m Dash in a wind-aided 10.42.
The other double event winner along with
Wilks (100m and 200m dashes) was Nicholas Frimpong of East Hartford who
won both the High Jump (6'8") and the Triple Jump (47'7.25"). Exciting
track races featured Tyler O'Brien of Rocky Hill edging Alex Anderson of
Enfield in the 400m dash (46.68 to 46.69), Donn Cabral of Glastonbury
leading from start to finish in the 1600m run (4:16.97) and Iren Williams
of Weaver winning in the 300m Hurdles (39.28). The 2007 State Open
champions in field events included Matthew Alexander of Windham Tech in
the Pole Vault (14'6"), Michael Hartfield of Manchester in the Long Jump
(22'4.25"), Prescott Fulton of Wamogo in the Discus Throw (169'7") and
Eric Alfiere of Woodland Regional in the Javelin Throw (192'2"). |
