Connecticut National
Champions and All-Americans Take Their Places...
(Mar 16, 2008 - 10:15am-By Ron Knapp)
Connecticut has a rich tradition of national caliber athletes, one just
has to review the record books and national meet results from over the
past years. Now you can add several names to the list of National
Champions and All-Americans after two days of competition at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships at the Armory Track & Field
Center in New York City and the
Nike Indoor Nationals
at Prince George's Sports Complex outside Washington, D.C. Competition
concludes today at both national meets.
On Saturday at the NSIC meet in New York, the Danbury Boys 4x1
Mile team of Joey Bubniak, Justin Rau, Parker Boudreau and Willie Ahearn
claimed the national championship title with a state record of 17:28.47,
close to the meet record of 17:25.98. Splits for the quartet on their
way to victory were Bubniak (4:27.4), Rau (4:25.3), Boudreau (4:17.8)
and Ahearn (4:17.9).
Also on Saturday at the NSIC meet in New York, in the Boys 4x1 Mile
race, Darien placed 9th (18:29.09). In the Girls 4x1 Mile Relay, the
Glastonbury Girls team placed seventh and lowered their state record
mark from 21:13.78 set last year to 21:04.66. In the same event,
Ridgefield placed 12th in 21:42.16 while Wm. Hall West Hartford placed
20th in 22:27.84. In the Boys Shot Put, Chad Nadeau of Central Village
(Plainfield) placed 14th (49'8.25") while both Stephen Johnson of
New Canaan and Aaron Nadeau (Plainfield) tied for 16th with
throws of 48'11.5".
On Saturday at the Nike Nationals in Maryland, junior Anna
Shields of Lewis Mills ran to a national championship title in the 5000m
with a time of 17:38.57 to win by over ten seconds. With a 1600m split
of 5:28 and a 3200m split of 10:59, Shields established a sizeable lead
to establish the third fastest meet time for the event that was first
run last year. Also on Saturday at the Nike Nationals in Maryland,
Joshua Olsen of Thomaston finished 16th in the 5000m race in 16:07.81.
On Friday night at the NSIC meet in New York, Donn Cabral of
Glastonbury won the Boys 5000m race in the fifth fastest time in high
school history with a time of 14:44.16 to become national champion.
Cabral chose to not compete this past indoor season in state meets as he
concentrated on competing at the USATX XC national meet held a few weeks
ago where he finished 31st of 100 runners. Connecticut took two more of
the top six All-American places as Everett Hackett of Wm. Hall West
Hartford placed third in 15:09.68 and Matt Terry of Danbury placed sixth
in a time of 15:18.51. In the Girls 5000m race, senior Heather Stephens
of Ridgefield bettered her state record of 17:54.68 set last year in the
meet as she placed second in the event with a time of 17:24.66. Again,
Connecticut took two more of the All-American places as Katie Matthews
of Rocky Hill placed fourth in 17:50.89 while Moira Kenney of Danbury
(Immaculate) was sixth with a time of 18:05.41. In the Boys Long Jump,
Mike Hartfield of Manchester placed fifth to secure All-American honors
with a leap of 23'0.25". In the Girls 4x55m Shuttle Hurdle Relay, the
Ridgefield Girls team of Jamie Heaslip, Molly Bower, Esther Tan and
Megan Schaefer finished in 36.01 for a fifth place and All-American
honors. To the best of my knowledge, this is the fastest time by a state
team for the event and will be entered as a new event in the State
Record book. (3/21/08 Correction: The best performance by a state
Girls team in the Girls 4x55m Shuttle Hurdle Relay was run by the
Weaver-Hartford team at the 2006 NSIC meet in finishing 4th in 34.99.)
Also on Friday night at the NSIC meet, Matt Berube of Southington placed
8th in the Boys High Jump (6'7") while Bradley Roth of Branford was 13th
at 6'3.25". In the Girls High Jump, Kristen Johnson of Manchester
(Bloomfield) placed 12th (5'5") while Grace Doering of Darien was 13th
(5'3"). In the Girls Shot Put, Rachel Morgan of Wm. Hall West Hartford
threw 37'4" for 20th place. The Glastonbury Girls DMR team placed 8th in
a time of 12:21.20 while their Boys DMR team placed 20 in 10:51.47, the
Naugatuck Girls DMR team placed 19th in 12:38.52. In the 5000m race,
other state finishers in the top twenty included included Forest
Misenti of Haddam (Xavier) 15:49.28 and Cory Loftis of Branford
(16:02.01). The Danbury Girls 1600m Sprint Medley Relay team placed 13th
in 4:13.68.

Danbury to CIAC Boys State Open Title...
(Feb 17, 2008 - 9:40am
- By
Ron Knapp) The Danbury Boys team were powered to a successful
defense of their 2007 State Open title by meet records from Parker
Boudreau in the 1000m Run and Willie Ahearn in the 1600m Run as they
scored 71 points to win over runner-up Wilbur Cross with 31 points.
Ledyard was third with 28 points while Hillhouse placed fourth with 27
points. The Danbury Boys team utilized balanced scoring across track,
field and relay events as they scored in nine of the fifteen events,
winning three. Danbury State Open champions included Parker Boudreau in
the 1000m as he led Matt Casey of Branford (2:30.72) across the line in
2:29.10 to set a new meet record. The winning effort of 4:13.29 in the
1600m Run by Willie Ahearn established a new meet record as well as a
new State record as he surpassed the old State record of 4:15.00 set by
JT Burke in 1988. Peter Jankovsky of Westhill was the 1600m runner-up in
4:19.85. The third State Open champion for Danbury was Daryl Baptiste as
he soared 23'6.25" to win the Long Jump over runner-up Michael Hartfield
of Manchester (22'11.75").
In a repeat of their Class L Meet 4x800m winning strategy, the William
Hall Boys team of Harry Mullin, Everett Hackett, Chris Rosenberg and
Nick Aguila surged to an early lead, fueled by a 1:58 leg by Hackett, to
win the event in 8:08.64 while Danbury placed second in 8:12.63. The
final lap of the 600m Run featured a duel between Matt Marriott of
Staples and Cas Loxsom of Wilbur Cross as Marriott crossed the line in
1:22.36 to set a new meet record while Loxsom finished in 1:22.94. The
55m Hurdle Finals was won by Bertony Jean-Louis of Brien McMahon in 7.51
followed by Everett Walcott of Weaver in 7.61. The finals of the 55m
Dash was a close call as Marvin McClendon of Hillhouse sprinted to a
6.40 clocking to edge Dominic Smith of Bloomfield and Jeff Wilkins of
Hillhouse, both timed in 6.43. The 1600m Sprint Medley Relay performance
by Wilbur Cross was a meet record as they finished in 3:38.13, anchored
by Cas Loxsom, to defeat fast closing teams from Ledyard (3:39.36) and
Danbury (3:40.55). Dominic Smith of Bloomfield gained his State Open
title in the 300m Dash as he finished in 34.90 to win over runner-up
Jeff Wilkins of Hillhouse (35.71). In a confusing ending to an exciting
3200m race that featured several lead changes, Everett Hackett of Wm.
Hall claimed the State Open title with a 9:21.34 finish to lead Dan
DeCresenzo of New Milford (9:23.01) and Matt Terry of Danbury (9:28.90)
across the line. The 4x400m Relay featured an exciting finish as Matt
Marriott ran the anchor leg to lead Staples to a win in 3:28.34 over
Wilbur Cross (3:28.47), anchored by Cas Loxsom. The final track event
produced a winning effort from Seymour as their 4x200m quartet won in a

Clarke Leads Hillhouse Girls to CIAC State Open
Title...
(Feb 17, 2008 - 8:30am
- By
Ron Knapp) Senior Ann Marie
Clarke of the Hillhouse-New Haven Girls team has been one of the top
performers all season long in the 55m Hurdles, 300m Dash and the anchor
leg of their 4x400m relay team. On Saturday at the CIAC State Open
Girls Meet at the New Haven Track and Field Center, Clarke won both
the 55m Hurdles and the 300m Dash as well as anchored the winning 4x400m
relay team to highlight the Hillhouse narrow 36 to 33 point margin of
victory over runner-up Glastonbury. The close meet scoring for the team
title was evident as third place Danbury and Weaver both scored 30
points. Hillhouse also received valuable third place points in the 55m
Dash as Shaiqua Burgess ran 7.27 to finish behind winner Shelby Walton
of Danbury (7.09) and Catherine Milledge of Weaver (7.25). Walton
successfully defended her 2007 title in an effort that tied the meet
record set by Shantea Calhoun in 2004. Completing the small but potent
Hillhouse team were 4x400m relay members Marlesha McClendon, Lyasia Loyd
and Jasmine Wilborne.
In the first track event of the day, fans were treated to one of most
talented fields of the Girls 4x800m relay in recent years as the top six
teams finished under 9:48, led by Glastonbury (9:41.27) and Norwich Free
Academy (9:41.66). The apparent winning team from Darien was later
disqualified for runner interference. The next final event on the track
featured state standout, junior Anna Shields of Lewis Mills took command
early in the 1000m run and finished in a near meet record of 2:55.81,
the meet record of 2:53.19 was set by Meghan Owen in the 2003 meet.
Shields was followed across the line by Christine Vogel of Glastonbury
in 3:00.09. The finish of the 600m Run was highlighted by a meet record
effort from Annelies Gamble of Amity as she broke the tape in 1:35.06 to
eclipse the old record of 1:35.74 held by Katherine D'Auria. Leah
Clement of East Lyme placed second in a fast time of 1:35.97. After a
short break, Anna Shields returned to win the 1600m run (5:00.02) in a
closely contested race where Courtney Dinnan of Hamden edged Kelly
Flannigan of Middletown at the line, 5:02.36 to 5:02.57. Finishing
behind Ann Marie Clarke's 8.29
winning effort in the 55m Hurdles was Rebecca Lesperance of Westhill
(8.54). The final heat of the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay was another
close finish as the Danbury quartet edged runner-up Glastonbury by
one-hundredth of a second, 4:18.04 to 4:18.05, with third place Tolland
at 4:18.72. In the 300m Dash, Ann Marie
Clarke repeated as Open champion (40.17) as she was chased across
the line by Elsa Millett of Manchester (41.22). The one heat of the
3200m Run combined the best in the state and fans were treated to a
close race between Heather Stephens of Ridgefield and Katie Matthews of
Rocky Hill until Stephens surged with two laps remaining to win in a
meet record 10:52.78 while Matthews was second in 10:56.57. It wasn't
surprising to see Stephens at the top of the awards podium for the 3200m
as she had won the event for the fourth consecutive year. The Hillhouse
Girls team ran 4:04.75 to win as Weston finished in second in 4:07.74.
In the final track event of the meet, the Danbury 4x200m Relay team
posted a new meet record as they combined to run 1:43.88 to better the
1:44.75 mark set by Wilbur Cross in 2004. Also under the old record was
second place Weaver as they finished in 1:44.21.
In the field events, senior Athalia Smith of New Britain successfully
defended her State Open title in the Shot Put as she threw 40'8" to win
the vent over Rachel Aliotta of Cheshire (39'10"). The Girls Long Jump
was won by junior Whitney Holder of Middletown as she sailed 18'2" to
take the win over runner-up Olivia Massey of Staples (17'4"). Allison
Barwise of Amity also defended her 2007 State Open title in the High
Jump as she won by clearing 5'4". A trio of second place finishers
cleared 5'2" including Jenna London of Wm. Hall, Emily Lane of Morgan
and Kristen Johnson of Bloomfield. The finals of the Pole Vault featured
one of the deepest fields in meet history as the top six finishers all
cleared the 10' barrier. Kim Johnson of Norwich Free Academy cleared
11'0" with fewer misses as runner-up Lauren Bennett of East Lyme also
cleared 11'0".

Featured Meet - 65th HPHS Invite
- Old Records Out - New Ones In for 2008
Manchester Boys and East Lyme Team
Champions...
(Jan 6, 2008) On Saturday at
the 65th Hartford Public Indoor Invitational
at Wesleyan University in Middletown CT, several old meet records were
discarded as new performances replaced them in this first major
invitational of the new year. In the race for team champion trophy, the
Manchester Boys' Team used a third place finish in the last event, 1600m
relay, to secure first place with 50 points over runner-up Southington
with 46 points. The East Lyme Girl's Team won the team championship
trophy by a 44 to 40 point margin over runner-up Glastonbury as Lauren
Bennett of East Lyme cleared 10'9.25" in the Pole Vault for a meet
record in the last event scored.
The assault on the meet
record books started in the field events in the first event as Matt
Berube of Southington won the Triple jump with a 45'6" record to eclipse
the 44'7" set by Jerrell Powell in 2006. Berube also won the High Jump
at 6'4" in a combined effort that earned him the Best in Field award.
The top three competitors leaped longer than 44 feet as Mike Hartfield
of Manchester was second (44'5.75") and Tristan Roberts of Conard was
third (44'2.25"). The Girls Triple Jump also featured a meet record as
Christy Nixon of East Lyme hop-skipped-jumped to a 34'6.25" mark to
break the 33'10" mark set by Amanda Gland in 2006. Also leaping over the
32' mark in this non-CIAC event were Lauren Bauchiero of Southington
(2nd-32'10"), Brittany Nkounkou of Wethersfield (3rd-32'8") and Alexis
Murray of St. Francis NY (32'4"). In the Girl's Long Jump, Whitney
Holder of Middletown extended the meet record with a leap of 18'9.75",
better than the 18'6" set by Nora Miller in 2006. Quenia Spievey of
Mercy was also over 17' as she leaped 17'4.75 for second place. The Boys
Long Jump was won by Mike Hartfield of Manchester as he sailed 21'8" for
the win, followed by Jaime Smith of Enfield with a 21'3" mark for second
place. The Boys Shot Put was won by Chad Nadeau of Plainfield (46'10")
while Matt Alexander of Windham Tech won the Pole Vault over Jacob Lusa
of Glastonbury as they both cleared the 13'6" height. The Girls Long
Jump also featured a tie for the meet record at 5'6" as Allison Barwise
of Amity won the event for a second year over Kristen Johnson of
Bloomfield, also at 5'6".
In the Track events, the Manchester Boys' Team
started earning their team title with a win in 8:35.34 followed by
Hamden (8:46.15) and Tolland (8:46.25). The Girls' 4x800m Relay was won
by Norwich Free Academy in 9:56.04 as they were followed across the line
by Glastonbury (9:58.89) and Conard (10:21.00). In the next final track
event, Andrew Judd of Conard won the 1000m in 2:37.67 as he led Dave
Krinjak of Manchester (2nd-2:39.85) and Jim Rosenberger of Southington
(3rd-2:39.93) across the line. The Girls' 1000m Run finish saw Christine
Vogel of Glastonbury hold a fast charging Kelly Flannigan of Middletown,
3:06.97 to 3:07.31. Alicia Kaestli of Staples was also under the 3:10
mark with a 3:09.85 for third place.
The 600m Run featured Boys' and Girls' meet records
as Dominic Smith of Bloomfield sped to a 1:24.49 to break the 1:25.86
mark set by Kelvin Dear last year. Also under the old meet record were
Mike Miner of NFA (1:24.73) and Rachid Sofiane of Lyman Hall (1:25.27).
In the Girls' 600m Run, Leah Clement broke her record from last year as
she ran 1:37.22 to win over Annelies Gamble of Amity (1:39.30) who was
also under the old record of 1:40.05. The Russell Scott 1-Mile Run was
captured by Everett Hackett of William Hall in 4:25.96 as he closed in a
2:10 for the last half of the race. His main rival in the race was Jason
Cusack of Griswold who finished second in 4:31.87. The Girls' 1-Mile Run
was a seesaw battle between Courtney Dinnan of Hamden, Katie Matthews of
Rocky Hill and Rosa Moriello of Naugatuck for most of the race before
Dinnan and Matthews traded places over the last two laps with Dinnan
winning in 5:13.91, Matthews in second (5:14.17) and Moriello in third
(5:16.60).
In the finals of the two straight-away events, the
Girls' 55m Hurdles was won by Catherine Milledge of Weaver in 8.85 as
she held off Meike Finger of New Britain (9.04) and Lauren Bennett of
East Lyme (9.12). In the Boys 55m Hurdles, Chris Kelly of Southington
won in 8.09, a large improvement over his preliminary qualifying time of
8.32. Ledyard owned the next two spots as Sam Saccomano finished in 8.11
followed by Tyler Edwardsen in 8.13. In the Boys 55m Dash, Domini |
