College Coaches
Learn By Doing Clinics / Lectures

On Friday, December 1st, 2006, at the New Haven City–Wide Field House at Hillhouse High School, the Athletic Department is hosting the Learn By Doing Clinic and Lecture program. We are inviting all interested junior high / high school athletes & coaches to attend this Learn By Doing Clinic. A list of the clinic presenters are noted below.

Sprinting

Bill Carson
East Carolina University


 

Among Carson's accomplishments, he was named president of the IC4A in 1999, was named as head coach of the South team at the 1993 United States Olympic Festival, and served as the Broad Event Chairman for Sprint Development for USA Track and Field from 1991-97, with the most highly noted athlete in the development program being world-class sprinter Maurice Greene. On the international scene, Carson is well respected as he has helped produce several Olympic-level athletes. Included in his list of prominent athletes is Lee McNeill, who was a five-time All-American at ECU before going on to represent the United States at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. McNeill competed for the U.S. on the 4x100-meter relay team. Most recently, Carson was named as assistant coach for the United States Junior Olympic team that will attend the World Junior Championships in Italy this summer. He will serve as the U.S. team's sprint coach. Coached Lashawn Merritt who ran the 3rd fastest time in US indoor history 44.93.
 

Girls' Hurdles

George Evans
Brown University

While at Youngstown, Evans improved the sprints program and helped lead the women's team to two Horizon League Championships. In all, he coached four individual conference champions, and an NCAA regional qualifier. Evans' athletes set nine school records and seven conference records during his tenure.

While at Lehigh, Evans was a two-sport athlete for the Mountain Hawks in track and football. In track, he was an NCAA East Regional Championship qualifier and a two-time Patriot League Champion as a senior. He won the indoor Patriot League title in the 60m and the outdoor 200m, and he added a second-place finish in the 100m at the IC4A Championships in 2004. He holds five school records in track & field, and was named Lehigh's Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year his senior year.

 

Boys' & Girls' Long Jump / Triple Jump

Ernest Moss
Davidson College

Ernest Moss is in his third year as an assistant coach with the track and field squad. Moss will be working primarily with the sprint, hurdle and field events. "Coach Moss' technical knowledge combined with a youthful enthusiasm and love for the sport adds another dimension to the team," stated Andrews. "He's a great motivator."
Moss has been part of the coaching ranks since 1994 and currently spends some of his spare time with the Charlotte Flights track team as well as the Rowan Express squad. Before arriving at Davidson, the native of Salisbury, N.C., spent the 2003-04 year as an assistant track coach at Lafayette College where he coached 26 ECAC/IC4A qualifiers, including seven NCAA regional qualifiers.

Boys' Hurdles


Hassaan Stamps

University of Vermont
This will be Coach Stamps second year as Asst Coach at The University of Vermont. Stamps was a four-year standout for the Tennessee Volunteers during his collegiate days. He was a four-time All-American, earning the honors as part of the 2001 and 2002 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. The team captain as a junior and senior, Stamps led UT to the 2001 and 2002 SEC team titles as well as the NCAA Championship in 2001 and an NCAA Runner-Up finish in 2002. Stamps was also a four time All-SEC performer during his career as a sprinter and hurdler and qualified for the NCAA’s six times in his four seasons.
 

Girls' Pole Vault


Brenner Abbott

Northeastern University
Brenner Abbott is in his sixth season on coach Sherman Hart’s staff. He specializes in the pole vault, javelin and high jump. Under Abbott’s tutelage, the Husky men’s and women’s vaulting programs have risen to regional and national prominence.
Abbott brought in current senior Laura Chmielewski, who earned All-America honors in the pole vault last year and has improved the NU record over a foot to 13’9.25. The previous NU record-holder was another of Abbott’s pupils, Joanelle Bailey-Chandler. He also coached the top two female high jumpers in NU history, Nicole Parker and Janel Kozlowski. On the men’s side, Abbott coached New England record-setter Wesley Shaw as well as America East pole vault champs Mike Couch, Ryan Cahill and Aaron Hill and America East javelin champ Adam Crossman.
In addition to his work at Northeastern, Abbott has been a featured clinician for four years with the “On the Road” Track and Field World Tour. He has also been the Director of Pole Vaulting at the Winged Foot Track & Field Camp for six years, the Director of Javelin Training at the Massachusetts Track and Field Academy for nine years and has been a pole vault clinician for eight years at the M-F Athletic Jumps Camp.
Prior to joining the Huskies, Abbott coached at his high school alma mater, Milford High. As an athlete, he was a captain of the track and field team at the University of Maine, where he set the pole vault record and was All-IC4A twice in the javelin. Abbott resides in Charlestown.
 

Distance Running  / Building the All-Around Athlete


Pat Henner

Georgetown University
Patrick Henner was named Assistant Coach for the Georgetown University Men's and Women's Track & Field and Head Coach of the Men's Cross Country program in July of 1999. He had an immediate impact on the Hoyas' Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Henner works primarily with the men's distance runners and that work has paid off with the emergence of several top GU distance runners such as Rod Koborsi, Franklyn Sanchez, and Fleet Hower. Sanchez and Koborsi each ran to cross country top-10 finishes, while Chris Lukezic, Mike Smith, and David Rodriguez each earned All-America honors. Henner also coached Indoor All-American Chris Miltenberg (3k), and Koborsi (5k). In 2004, Koborsi also won the 10,000m at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, and Hower, who earned a spot on the 2004 US Junior National Cross Country Team, won the 10,000m at the US Junior Track & Field Championship in 2004 as well as finishing first at the BIG EAST Championships.
During the 2004 Cross Country season, the Hoyas ranked as high as sixth place in the nation. Henner coached the Hoyas to runner-up honors at the BIG EAST Championship and first place at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, easily qualifying for the NCAA Championship. The Hoyas returned from the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana 15th as a team and two All-American Certificates (Rod Koborsi, 10th, and Chris Lukezic, 43rd). During the 2003 Cross Country season, the Hoyas were ranked as high as ninth in the Country. The GU Cross Country team places first at the BIG EAST Championship and finished second at the Regional Championship, a mere two points behind rival Villanova, qualifying them for the NCAA Championship where they finished seventh. Georgetown's 2000 Men's Cross Country team tied for seventh place at the NCAA Championship, the best team finish for the Hoyas since the 1995 season when GU earned sixth place. In addition, Sanchez's fifth-place finish was the best for a GU runner since Steve Holman's 10th-place showing in 1991. Georgetown also won the 2000 NCAA Mid- Atlantic Regional Championship and earned runner-up honors at the 2000 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. The 1999 GU Cross Country squad won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championship and went on to place 11th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. For his efforts, Henner and Coach Emertius Frank "Gags" Gagliano earned 1999 District II Cross Country Coach of the Year awards.
Henner joined the Georgetown coaching staff from James Madison University where he has served as Head Men's and Women's cross country coach, as well as Assistant Track & Field coach for the Dukes from 1990-99. His coaching achievements as Head Coach at JMU include being named the 1998 NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year as well as Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Cross Country Coach of the Year. He has coached 27 All-Americans, including Pete Weilenman, Olympic Trials Finalist in the 5,000m; Julie Speights Henner, 1996 Olympian in the 1,500m and the 1993 and 1995 World University Games' Silver Medalist; Matt Holthaus, four-time All-American in the mile and 1,500m and 1999 World Championship Team member; and Russ Coleman, Bethany Eigel, and Jason Long, three time All-Americans. Henner has produced over 20 All-East performers, three Academic All-Americans and 20 CAA All-Academic. In addition, Henner's 1998 Men's Cross Country squad won the CAA and Southeast Region Championships and placed ninth at the NCAAs, while his 1998 women's team placed third at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships. School records fell in all events that Henner coached while at JMU.
Henner graduated in 1983 from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education and social sciences. From 1983-87, he taught seventh grade history and coached cross country and track & field at Blacksburg Middle School in Blacksburg, Va. His teams went undefeated in dual meet and AA State Cross Country competition for four years, and his girls' and boys' teams won the Cross Country State Championship crown four times (1983-87) under his direction. Henner's girls' track & field teams were two-time State Champions.
